BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tuesday, March 7. The Board met at the Normal School at 3 p.m. Present —Messrs J. Inglis (chaiiman), T. W. Hali, A. Duncan, H. R. Webb, W. Montgomery, W. Rolleston. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. On the application of Mr Tancred leave of absence was granted to him for the month of March. reports . Several reports by Mr Restell on the the schools examined by him, a report by the Board of Examiners on the classification of Messrs Mclntoah and Hamilton, were laid on the table. A list of promotions recommended by the Board of Examiners was also laid before the Board. ELECTION OF committees. The chairman said that as the 9th of April was the date for the election of school committees, it would be necessary for the Board to take steps to appoint returning officers, and give notice of the elections. He would suggest that the chairmen of school committees should be appointed as returning officers. It was decided that in the event of any of the chairmen beiog candidates, they must appoint a deputy. The date of election was fixed for April 9th. examination for standards. A recommendation was received from the inspectors that the examination for standards should take place only once a year. Pupils to be enabled to pass in two standards at these examinations, The matter was referred to the Board of Examiners. SOUTHBRIDG-E. A letter was read from the committee asking for a lavatory to be added to the school. The Board sanctioned the erection of the porch, at a cost of £54. It was also decided to erect the necessary fencing to divide the boys and girls, and to sanction the levelling required in the section. RAILWAY FARES. A letter was read from the {General Government, stating that the question of fixing fares for school children was under consideration in connection with the general management of the railways throughout the colony As regarded the grants of free passeß to teachers in the Normal School lecturee, the department should bear the cost of their travelling. PHYSICAL SCIENCE. A letter was read from Professor Bi.ukc.Tton, calling attention to the fact that iu the examination for provincial scholarships a' d other examinations connected with the Board, physical science had no place. The Ktcreiury pointed out that botaiy. physiology, &c, were represented on t)t< ex-iminal;'jn lints of the Board. Therefore it would be seen that physical science had a place. The secretary was instructed to reply to that effect. SCHOOLMASTERS' ASSOCIATION. A letter was read from the secretary to tae Certificated Teachers.' Association., asking

that they might have the use of a small room in the Normal School for their meetings. The secretary was instructed to reply expressing (he regret of the Board tha they were unable to comply with the r quest. INCIDENTAL EXPENSES A number of payments for incidenta expenses to schools were sanciioned by th> Board. NORMAL SCHOOL. Plans for iron railing on the dwarf walled gates necessary at the Normal Schoc were laid before the Board. It was decided to adjourn the consideration of this matter for the present. KAIAPOI. Specification for the requisite repairs to the school at Kaiapoi was laid before the Board by Mr Cane. It was resolved that the committee be requested to call for tenders for the repairs, the tenders to be submitted to the Board. BING3LAND. A report by Mr Dane on the school was read, stating that he had inspected Unbuilding, and found it in a safe condition He recommended that the lining of the root iibouid be removed, and the shrkkiag which had taken place remedied. It was resolved that the necessary repairs recornun uded by Mr Cane should be done, and that tenders should be called for painting the school. EAST CHRISTCHUKCH. A letter was read from Mr Wolfe com plaining of the nuisance caused to him by the dilapidated state of the fence around theswimming bath at the East Ghristchurch school. It was decided that the secretary write to the committee, requesting them to have th< fence put in buch a condition as to prevent the bathers being seen.
