Drunkenness. —Four inebriates, who appeared for the lirst time, were each fined ss, Illegally on Premises. —A charge against William Dennis for being found asleep in a railway carnage at the Christchurch Bail way Station, at an early hour of the morning, was dismissed. William Duncan and John Hall, for being illegally on the premises of Mr J. Goodyer, Lichfield street, were each fined 10s. Affiliation. —Samuel Dickey, who had been summoned under the name of Samuel Mcßeven, appeared to answer the information of refusing to contribute towards the support of his illegitimate child, of which Jane Newman is the mother. Mr Joynt appeared for the complainant, and Air Izard for the defendant. The paternity was not denied, but Air Izard submitted an agreement signed by complainant, who had agreed to receive £3O in full satisfaction of her claim. Mr Joynt showed that the agreement had been obtained under pressure, and that as the money mentioned had not been paid or even tendered, the agreement had been unexecuted and was void. Mr Izard here submitted a note signed by complainant, saying defendant was not the father of the child. In reply to her counsel, complainant explained that she bad written and addressed the note to defendant's mother at his request, as he said if she did not he was so bothered that he would have to leave home, and if she consented it would be »ll right, and he would marry her by and bye. At this stage his Worship ad journed the case at Mr Izard's request until a later hour, to allow of a subfoeaa being issued for a necessary witness. Protection Order.— Airs Kate Faulkner obtained a protection order against her husband, James Faulkner, on the ground of habitual drunkenness, and his having failed for sometime past to contribute towards the support of herself and family. His Worship also ordered defendant to pay 20s weekly, and gave complainant the custody of her youngest child, .Assault —Daniel Ansteusen was charged on summons with having assaulted Henry Braith. The assault had arisen out of complainant’s refusal to lend defendant half a crown, when he chased Smith with a spade and struck him. Defendant was under the influence of drii.k at the iinr'. Defendant called witnesses who stated that the whole) affair was a joke. IDs Worship thought otherwise, amt imposed a lice of 10s and costa. A second information of assaulting Constable Fullrook, who had been called by the complainant in the previous case, was heard. Fined 40l stealing from A Shop, —W. F. Forder was charged with stealing a vest from the shop of Hallenstein Bros, Cashel street. Accused's manner, when passing constable Hamill near Hallensteiu’s, had aroused bis suspicion, and having followed the man as far as Lichfield street, he found the vest hidden under his coat. It was proved that the vest had not been sold to any one, and had been hung up that morning outside Messrs Hallensteiri’a shop door. Sentenced to three months’ im« prigoament with bard labor,
LYTTELTON. (Before W. Donald, Esq., 11. M.) Drunkenness. —Andrew Lyndon, arrested by Constable Bullen, was fined 20s for this offence.
Having no Visible Keans of Boppoet.—James Boss, on remand, charged with this offence, was discharged. DESERTION. —John Parsons and Andrew McConnell, two seamen who had been sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment on the 23rd, for being stowaways aboard the Wakatipu, were charged with above offence. It appeared Sergeant-major O’Grady had made enquiries at Dunedin, and found they were both deserters from the ship Auckland now lying at that port. Accused were remanded for eight days. Civil Cases. — Hardicke v Thompson, claim £7 13s. Mr H. N. Nalderfor plaintiff. Defendant was ordered to pay 15s per week; costs, 13s; solicitor’s fee, 21s. Trustees in Murray’s Estate v Cribb, claim 193 4d. Mr H. N. Nalder for plaintiff; judgment for amount claimed and costs.
