The masters of vessels sailing for Wellington are warned that the hulk Eli Whitney has sunk in the harbor, about a cable’s length E.N.B. from the wharf. The mainmast stands about 25ft out of the water, on which a white light will be hoisted. February 25. Sailed—Wakatipu, for Sydney, at noon. Wellington, February 2Gth.

The New Zealand and Mercantile Agency Company’s London cable message reports re wool sales that twelve thousand bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts, and that sales opened at an average decline of Id to lid on last sale prices ; that greasy has declined Id; scoured and superior combing washed have declined ! ; kl to 2d since close of last sales.

Arrived—Taupo. Captain Carey's account re the EU Whitney is that after leaving the wharf it waa blowing hard, and was very dark at the time. Saw a schooner’s lights ahead, cleared her, and then saw a milk, which had no lights burning, ahead. The steamer was going easy at the lime, and the engines were reversed immediately to full epeed astern. The Taupo touched the hulk so lightly that passengers standing on the deck scarcely felt the shock. Carey immediately sung out to mate and carpenter, asking whether any damage waa done, and they replied not to any extent to bulwarks. They stood by the bulb for five minutes, all hands forward flinging out at the top of their voices, asking v/holher anyone wan on board, but they got no reply ; ro they steamed on, Captain Carey was greally shocked on hearing the result, as he bad no idea of the collision being serious, or that there were any people aboard. Everybody on the steamer is equally surprised. HoktjJka, February 24. Haiti recommenced at one o’clock and continued at frequent intervale all the after noon, quite stopping all shooting. The only communication between the camp and the range is by fording the Kawhaka in a dray. There is no sign of its clearing off, Hokitika, February 2(i. morning broke out very fine, but' at one o'clock heavy rain again set in,

and continued nearly ail night. The Govern mant bridge washed away was replaced. A start was ni •de at 6.30 a.m. to-day with the Carbine Sixth Match, but owing to everything being saturated by water, some delay took place with the fire lighted to dry the target, and only the 200 yards was got through before lireakfast, At 9 a.m. the rid'S look up the 300 yards of the sixth match. Greymouth, February 26. The Governor and party were conveyed across the bar this morning by the steamer Despatch, and transhipped to the Hiuemoa, which sailed at nine for Westport. The Wealth of Nations has yielded 598 ounces of amalgam for the week, and 616 ounces retorted yield for the mouth. A dividend of 4s has been declared.

The Court of Enquiry re the wreck of the Halcyon gave their decision to-day, to the effect that the painter of the boat fastened astern of the steamer fouled the propeller, and that blame is attached (o some one for this careless act, as in all probability the steamer would have cleared the reef had not this accident occurred. It appeared, from the testimony of witnesses, there was no drunkenness nr disorderly conduct throughout the voyage, and the loss of the vessel was not caused by any wrongful act on the part of the master or other officer. The certificates of Captain Denchrass and Engineer M if >.it were returned to them.
