COMMERCIAL.
The market for breadstufls continues iu a very unsettled state, as buyers generally do not care to operate without seeing bulk samples, whilst farmers are equally independent, and the result is very lew sates are being made, No doubt really sound wheat actually stacked prior to the rain would, at the present moment, realise over ss, as a few millers are determined purchasers, but exporters cannot touch this price. Wheat carefully stocked and properly looked after during the late rain is worth 4s to 4s Ud, according to condition ; but is Gd to 3s is likely to be the ruling prices of bauty grown samples. For flour millers are very diffident in quoting, except for small parcels, for which various prices, from £l2 to £ls, are asked. Oats are offering at is for bright samples, discolored lots at Is Sdto is lOd. A fair proportion of barley was secured before the rain, and such lots fetch 4s to 4s Gd, but damaged samples are almost quite unsaleable. _ Owing to au improved outside demand, butter has suddenly jumped up, undis now selling at Is Cheese is quiet, atodtosld. Hams and bacon continue in fair inquiry atßidr.o‘b. A moderate trade has been done in the import markets duringthe week. Henncssy’s bulk and case brandy have been quitted at Os Gd to 10s and 32s to 33s i.b.; good second brands command 8s readily. Rum, whiskey, and geneva have been disnosed of in trade lots at current rates. Sugars— A steady demand exists for white and yellow crystals at £36 to £lO for the former, and £34 to £34 10s for the latter. Good trade sales have been recorded in white ar.d yellow counters. Teas—a fair amount of sales have been recorded at satisfactory rates, the demand being mostly for boxes. A good business has been done in Bass’s bulk ale ; a parcel of 60 hhds has been cleared off at £9 10s to £lO 10s. Bottled ales and stouts—The demand has been fair for good brands. Colza oil—Considerable sales have been booked at 5s 3d. Vinegar— Champion’s has been in fair request at 2s 4d to 2s 6d d.p; other brands range from 2s to 2s 3d. Cornsacks move off freely at Ds 6d to 10s lor Dundee and Calcutta make. Fencing wire—The demand at present is rather limited; we have no change to report in prices. (Ament —This line remains iu a rather unsatisfactory state, the top price tor little lots, ex store, being 18s to 18s 6d. A tender for 1300 casks for the Christchurch Drainage Board was accepted at 17s 2d per cask, d.p Standard irou is moving off fairly at £ll to £l2. Galvanised Iron —Best brands are worth £3l to £32 for 6ft to 9t. lengths. The Wiltshire and Hopeful arrived from liOndrn on 17th instant with cargoes of general merchandise.
Messrs J, T. Ford aud Co report on tne live stock market tor the week ending Friday, the 23rd inst, as under : —The sheep supplied at the Addington Yards on Wednesday last were much in excess of requirements of buyers. The sheep were quitted •with much difficulty, and a large number of stores turned out unsold. The cause was not so much that (he sheep were not wanted as much as the farmers were so busily engaged with ttieir crops that tuey could it t give their time tor market purposes bo soon as the stubbles are cleared we have not the least douce but a brisk demand will spring up for both breeding aud grazing sheep. The autumn pastures are bound to be 1 nil of feed, and the turnip crop is an established fact 1033 sheep, 280 head of cattle, and 204 pigs were the week’s supply, out of which our entries comprised 1700 sheep, 131 head of cattle, and 204 pigs, on account of Messrs Fitzroy, Kevell, Higgins, Aitkon, Williams, Gordon, McLeish, Carter, .Nelson, Keith jun, Burns, Adams, and others, at for crossbreds, on account of Mr Carter, at 10s 6d each; crossbreds, on account of Mr Uevell, at 9s and 8s 3d each; merino wethers, ou account of Mr Fitzroy, at Os (id to Gs 9d each. A line of 43 head of cattle, on account of Mr McLeish, at Irom £lO os to £ll each; a line of cattle, on account of Mr Keith, jun, at £7 15s each ; on account of Mr Williams we sold 204 pigs at from 13s 3d to 31s each. During the week we have succeeded in placing several lines ot store sheep for forward delivery,
