ALL-ENGLAND ELEVEN CRICKET MATCH.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sik, —In connection with the forthcoming match I have heard of an act of liberality 7 (? ) on the part of one of our local firms that will go unsurpassed for a considerable time. It appears that the assistants in the various drapery and clothing establishments arc anxious to be able to witness the contest between the All-England Eleven and the Canterbury cricket teams next week ; and so, in order that their desire may be gratified, two gentlemen connected with the Christchurch Drapers’ and Clothiers’ Association, made a complete canvass of all houses in the trade, with the view of obtaining two halfholidays. The object in view was a laudable one, and every place of business visited (with one exception) gave a willing consent to close, on the one condition that the closing was to be unanimous. The establishment of the firm who refused to agree to more than one half-day 7 , was then visited, and it was pointed out to the proprietors that they 7 now had it in their power to perform a gracious action, by complying with the wish of the majority. But no, they would not, and the consequence is that the whole of the drapery 7 and clothing establishments in this city will remain open on the second and third days of the match, for the simple reason that one firm out of pure obstinacy refused to agree to what every one will admit was a perfectly reasonable request. Yours, &0., SPEED MELIORA.
