CANTERBURY AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

The following is the order of the pro gramme : 100 Yards race—lst prize, value £3 ; 2nd,

G. Westenra J. Fowler ...

value £l.

E. T. Moore, A. H. Anderson, and A. E, F. Johnston also ran. J. F. Wachsmann was scratched.

Johnston had the worst of the start, and shortly after getting away Westenra showed slightly in the lead. As he neared home he put on a strong spurt and won by about four yards, Fowler just a shade ahead of Anderson and Johnston, who were running together. Time, lljsecs. Running Long Jump—lst prize, value £2. G. Westenra (18ft lOin) I W. Tosswill (18ft 6in) 0 H. McCardell (18ft s£in) ... 0

Wachsmann, who was entered, did not compete. 440 Yards—lst prize, value £3 ; 2nd, value £l. A. R. F. Johnston 1 G. Westenra 2

Johnston made the running from the start, and got away with the lead for about twenty yards. At the second last turn for home Westenra improved the pace, lessening the distance very much before reaching the turn in. Johnston here spurted, and keeping the inside running, Westenra, who was in a line behind him, got somewhat out of stride and ground when working over to the outside, An excellent struggle followed, Johnston breasting the tape about three yards ahead. Time—sßaecs.

One Mile Walking race—lst prize, value £3; 2nd, value £l. P. H. Duncan 1 M. Smith 2 J. Rule 0

Duncan took the lead at the start, and after dropping one shoe, though he lost a little ground while getting off the other, he aucceded in keeping the start until the finish, He walked fairly, and with good style. Smith is not only a fair, but also a pretty walker, and will acquire speed with practice. The distance was done in 7mln 30aecB.

One Mile race—lst prize, value £4 4s, (presented by Mr|M. Sandstein); 2nd, value £l. A. Mathias I J. P. Wachsmann 2 E. Q. Hawkes 0

Wachsmaun went to the front at the start, and led round slowly the first and second laps, with Hawkes and Mathias running alongside each other. On rounding the second lap Mathias left his companion and went up behind the leader, both increasing the pace from here and also their distance from Hawkes. When about one-third of the last lap had been travelled, the pace was put on properly by both. Mathias, who had been literally holding himself in up to this and running in good form and with splendid judgment, collared Wachsmann at ha'.f the lap, passed and came away easily, running in a winner amid*loud applause by about 25 yards. Time, 4min 50secs, or 43'tsecs over that taken for the same distance last year. Running High Jump—lst prize, value £2. W. Tosswill (4ft JHin) ... ... 1 J. Rule (4ft U in) 0 220 Yards Handicap race—lst prize, President's Cup ; 2nd, value £l. H. McCardell (10 yards) ... t J. Milton (14 yards) f J. Fowler (3 yards) 3 A. R. F. Johnston (scratch), and E. F. Moore (7 yards) also raD. A. 0. Saltmarsh, J, Rule and W. Robinson were scratched. The long starts men came up equal and and kept the lead. Fowler struggled hard to reach them, and came up close at the final spurt, landing less than a yard behind the leaders, whs were said to have breasted the tape together, but in our opinion Milton was, if anything, a mere shade in front. Time, 24|sec. It was dreaded that the first two should run off for places, but as McCardell sprained his ankle and retired, the first prize was awarded to Milton.

120 Yards Hurdle race ; 10 hurdleß, 3 feet high—lst prize, value £3 ; 2nd, value £l. J. Rule 1

J. Toes will..

W. Chapman and A, B. F. Johnston alao ran; M. Smith and W. Robinson were scratched.

Thiß race had to bo run over again, as at the termination of the first one, which Tosswill won, with rule five yards behind, and Chapman third, the starter (Mr Davis) stated that Toßswill had got away for about three yards while he was in the act of pulling the trigger, but before the explosion was heard, and under the circumstances he could not recall him or stop the discharge The second event leaulted as above, with Chapman third, Rule winning by a little over a yard. Time—First race, 20Jsec ; second, 23Jsec. Half Mile Handicap race First prV, value £3; 2nd do, value £l. A. Mathias (30 yds) 1 E. G. Hawkes (55 yds) 2 J. F. Waschman (scratch) ... 0

This waß an easy raco for Mathias, and it was apparent from the start that Waschmann had bean handicapped out of it. Time—2min 12|sec. The time last year was 2min 15aec, but about 4Jsec must be added to this year's time to allow for the start. 440 Yards Hurdle race, over eight hurdleß, 3ft 6in high—lst prize, £4 4s, presented by Messrs Peterson and Co; 2nd prize, value £l. W. Tosswill 1 Robinson and Johnston were scratched, and Tosswill walked over.

Pentecost and M. Gibbons (scratch), S. Hewitt (5 yds\ H. Morris (W yds), T. Brough H 5 yds). The starts men had been rather lightly let ia, Stafford went away with the lead,' and kept it three quarters of tbu way round, when he was collared and passed by Hawkes who ran iu a winner by about 12 yards. Oomiog round the turn for home, Pentecost ran through his immediate leaders, and struggled hard up the straight to catch Stafford, who, however, reached the post about a yard in front of him. Time - 55aec. Quarter-milo Handicap race—lst prize, value £3 ; 2nd, value £l, J. Milton (40 yds) 1 W. Tosswill (30yds) 2

Milton was never reached from the start, and continue to improve his position all along. Turning into the second last corner from home Tosswill passed Bule, but failed to catch Milton, who won easily by about 15 yards. Time—s3secs.

Consolation Handicap, 150 yards—lst prize, value £2 ; 2nd, value £l. A. H. Anderson (2 yds) 1 J. Fowler (scratch) 2 B. T, Moore (10 yds) also ran. This race was won by about a yard. Time—l7secß.

This concluded the programme, and a general movement was made for the enclosure in front of the ladies' pavilion, where the prizes were to be presented. Mr Bolleston, who occupied a position in front of the table containing the prize cups, said that at the request of the committee Mrs Bolleston had consented to present the prizes that evening, but being absent unavoidably through illness, he had been asked to take her place. The name of each winner was then called and recoived his prize from Mr Bolleston amid rounds of applause. When all the prizas had been presented, Mr Tosswill (hon sec) thanked Mr Bolleston for his kindness and the public for their attendance. The club, he said, had been started for six years, and the present was the first year it was out of debt. The committee hoped to be able to secure the cricket ground for next year's sports, when they trusted they would be favored with a larger attendance than they had that day. Quarter-mile Handicap race.

A quarter-mile handicap race for a purse was run by the three following well-known pedestrians : Gibbens (5 yds) 1 Hewett (17 yds) 2 Pentecost (scratch) 0 Gibbens won by about 4 yards. This closed the day's sports.
