Aa *here had bee»i « g re * c tdesi of business the week, we budcommittee had noi had time to consider tne enforcement o£ the pan Byfltem zn the suburbs, and several other important b» teis. There waa a letter from Dr Powell, which shewed moßt conclusively the baa state of the suburbs, and went to prove most conclusively, if such were required, that immediate steps were neceßß&iy for draining the district.
The report of the Chief Inspector of Nuisances was read. The following letter was read from the Medical Officer of Health : " February 8th f 1877. 11 Sib —I have the honor to report that a case of typhoid fever having been reported to me I visited the locality indicated—the house of Mr Wills, one of a block of six brick cottages, adjoining Colombo road south. I found that Mrs Wills was suffering from an attack of fever of a mild but prolonged type, but was now convalescent. One of the children appeared to be sickening for the same complaint. On making an inspection of the premises 1 found the following btate of things. This block of cottages .occnpieß a low lying site, apparently about -a quarter of an acre or something over in extent the site is quite undrained, and the ground st the back of the houses saturated with'moisture. The household slops are ; thrown out on the ground at the back, and 'lie about the foundations of the houses. Pans -are used ia the closets, which I am informed are emptied by the inhabitants once a fort.night, holes being dug in the gardens for the receptions of the night soil. As this has i been going on for years I need hardly point . out that it would not be surprising if at anj • this time this block should become a focus of -typhoid fever of a virulent type. On coojmu .Tiicstiugwitb Dr Frankisb, the practitioner in
attendance on this case, he informed m that every year for years past he has attended cases of fever in these cottages, and that last year he had nine or ten patients under treatment.
" I have, &c, •'LI. Powell, " Medical Officer of Health. " The Chairman of the Local Board " of Health."
The matter waa referred to the chief inspector to devise some means of drainage for the cottages spoken of.
After the transaction of some further business, the Board adjourned for a fortnight.
