NEWS OF THE DAY.
Woolston Meeting be Drainage.—A public meeting of ratepayers to discuss the Drainage question, will be held this evening at the Oddfellows' Hall, Woolston, at halfpast seven. THE Kaiapoi CASE.—The Church Magazine says :—" The Church Advocate has forwarded the verdict arrived at by the assessor's court to the Primate, who will lay it before the Bench of Bishops immediately after the termination of the session of the General Synod." Advances to the Government.—A Wellington telegram states that the Government has completed arrangements with the Bank of New Zealand for advances to the extent of a million, which with the half million already borrowed will, it is said, enable the Government to avoid borrowing at home for two years. Chicago Minstrels. These clever artistes gave their third representation at the Colonists' Hall last evening to a capital house. An excellent programme Avas presented, the various items of which were well rendered, and elicited loud applause. The company appear again to-night in Lyttelton and to-morrow at the Canterbury Music Hall.
City Rates.—Notwithstanding the number of notices to ratepayers by advertisements and otherwise, the Council have been compelled to take Bummary measures for collecting the outstanding rates, and 200 summonses have been already issued this week. It is the intention of the Council to summon each ratepayer who remains in arrear until the roll is exhausted. Canterbury Archery Club. This club held a handicap shooting for prizes yesterday afternoon. The weather was not favorable for large scores, and as this was only the second meeting since the recess, members showed want of practice. In the ladies' department Miss Parkinson took first prizp, Miss Ross being second ; and Mr Worthy took the first prize for gentlemen.
Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. —The annual sports of this club take place on the Show Grounds to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon, commencing at 2 o'clock. The committee have provided a ladies' reserve with seats, and the running course has been putinfair running order. Itistobehopedthat the weather will be favcable, as from the entries every event will be hardly contested. Mrs Rolleston has kindly consented to give away the prizes. 1.0.0. F., M.U., Kaiapoi.—At a meeting of this lodge on Tuesday evening, Dr W, H. Ovenden was appointed medical officer, in place of Dr Fletcher, resigned, prior to his leaving Kaiapoi for the Kaikoras. The members of the order have recorded their appreciation of the services rendered by their late medical officer. In reference to the new hall in Hilton street, the foundation of concrete has been finished some time, but the great difficulty experienced in procuring the quality and sizes of the timbers for the building haa rendered it impossible for the contractor to proceed with it as quickly as was intended. Hereford Street Baptist Church. — Nearly 40D persons sat down to tea last evening, which was supplied by Mr A. Gee. After the tables were cleared, a public meeting was held in the church, which was crowded to excess. The chair was taken by Mr Sawle, who stated that the object of the meeting was to welcome the Rev Charles Dallaston, who had just arrived from England by the Waipa to fill the position of pastor of the church. The Rev Charles DallasWg -Stated the particulars of his call from the College, in response to this church's invitation, through the Rev C. H Spurgeon, and exposed a hope that all would co-operate in the v*oik he desired to see accomplished. The meeting wgb afterwards addressed by the Revs W. J. Habens, B. J. Westbrooke, J. Elmslie, and Messrs Colee.. Geo. Johnston, and Simmonds. The meeting was brought to a close by the Rev Charles Dallaston pronouncing the benediction, after the usual votes of thanks. The choir of the chnrch, assisted by friends from otoer churches, gave several pieces during the evening.
