Since the Suwarrow embroglio Sterndale has been preparing to fit out a vessel for the island where treasures are reported to have been concealed by the Spanish. A few days ago W. J. Hunt, formerly sharebroker, and latterly of Napier, entered into negotiations for the schooner Canterbury on behalf of himself, Sterndale, Hill, Wilson, Mair, and others, with the object of fitting out an expedition to seize Suwarrow, The vessel has taken in stores ready to clear at the customs. Hunt allowed a portion of the purchase money to remain on mortgage. A disagreement arose about insurance, and to-day Hunt went to the lawyer’s office to see the deeds of the vessel. He pocketed them, and a clerk pursued. A fight ensued, and Hunt was given in custody, An information will probably be laid against bim. All the purchase money had been paid, but the lawyer held the deed till the insurance was obtained, as a guarantee for the mortgage. It is understood that Messrs Henderson and Macfarlane are preparing another expedition to hold Suwarrow. A fight is imminent.
Last;evening the St Matthew’s parishioners decided against erecting a stained glass window in the Church, because the window represented a crucifix. Two Mormon prophets, being unsuccessful here, have left per Rotorua for Sydney. Resolutions at the Harbor Board meeting to-day had the effect of rescinding the former decision re deepening the dock. Notice of motion has been given for next meeting to deepen the dock sill three feet. At the Waste Lands Board to-day it was decided to accede to the request of Mr Broomhall for any surplus available land at Te Aroha. A report re the Yesey Stewart Kati Kati settlement showed that seventeen of the forty-two families had failed to fulfil their contract, Mr Stewart requested 10,000 acres more, at 15s. The Board decided not to sell under £l, Be the petition Horn the Thames for 10,000 acres for a special settlement, the Board urges the Chief Commis* sioner to bring the matter under the notieff of the Government.

Mr Edward Pearce, M.H.R, for the city, resigns, and leaves for England by the March mail.
The following are the principal amounts won at the recent race meeting and paid over since Mr Redwood, £375 ;Mr Ray, £239 ; Mr Gilligan, £l4O ; Mr Durie, £IOO ; Mr Walker, £IOO ; Mr Brown, £BO ; Mr Fraser, £7O. The total amount paid was £1147. It was agreed that the amount of next year’s Cup money should be £SOO. There were twenty-five and twenty-two nominations received respectively for the Wellington Derbies of 1878-9. Wellington, February 14.
Arrived —Wakatipu, from Sydney. Passengers for Lyttelton—Miss Sampson, Mr Zouch; twenty-nine in steerage, and 270 tons cargo for all ports. She leaves for the South this evening. The Hon G. McLean and Dr Lemon have returned per the Wakatipu. Yesterday the Governor visited the Southern Cross training schooner, and the boys were put through their drill. She sailed for Dunedin in the evening.
The original scheme of forming an opposition Gas Company is again revived. John McCann, recently sentenced for rape, received thirty lashes this morning. Owen Kane also received twenty-five lashes for a similar offence. The men suffered severely and groaned. Nelson, February 13.
The General Synod the whole of last night was in committee on the Ecclesiastical Tribunals Bill. The session will probably close on Thursday, The English cricket match is to commence to-morrow.

Killeen’s Qreymouth Hotel and store adjoining were burned down this morning about four o’clock. The buildings are insured in the South British for £SOO. Dunedin, February 13.
At a meeting of the University Council, held this afternoon, a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of proceeding with the establishment of a medical school in connection with the Otago University. Captain Hutton was also appointed Professor of Natural Science. His Honor Mr Justice Williams to-day delivered the judgment of the Court of Appeal in the case of Webb v the National Bank of New Zealand. The rule was made absolute for the arrest of judgment, but without costs.
At a meeting of the City Council to-day, attention was drawn to an article in the New Zealand Temperance Times, which reflected severely on the Fever Hospital. It was decided to write to the editor, asking him if he was prepared to allow his information on the subject to be made public. Port Chalmers, February 14. Sailed—Schooner Flirt, for Lyttelton.
