WELLINGTON JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

[By Telegraph ] {Prom a correspondent of the Press.) Second Hay—February 10, President, Hon W. Fitzherbert, M.E.11. ; vice-president, Geo Hunte , Esq, M.H.R ; judge, E. Pearce, Esq, M. H.R. ; stewards, Messrs Geo Crawford, J.P. ; J. M'Dowell, Joseph Paul, A. Braithwaite, Dr Diver, J. Martin, and J. S. M. Thompson ; starter, Mr Andrew Young; hon treasurer, Mr J. R. George; clerk of the scales, Mr W. Bromley; clerk of the course, Mr James Prosser. The weather on Saturday was a slight improvement on the first day, but was bleak and cold, and interfered a good deal with by showers. The attendance was notwithstanding very fair. The Governor was present, and the Stand was well filled. The first event, the Handicap Hurdle race, brought out a field of seven. In spite of his impost Tommy started at 2 to 1, but the old horse did not look over gay, and St Albans and Te Whetu at a point more seemed both better things. St Albans made the running the greater part of the race, waited on by Te Whetu, who was well ridden by Watty, and came away full of running at the last turn and won easily. For the Cup seven faced the starter, and Fallacy being scratched, and Templeton being only convalescent from a knock received a few days ago, Guy Fawkes started with to 6 to 4 on him. Glenary’s running on the first day was good enough to induce a few to back her, and old Tam was backed a little too, The race requires little description, Guy Fawkes waited the greater part of the race, bad all his horses safe at the last turn, and won easily; Tam ran a very good horse, and indeed much better than one could have been expected from his performances in the Provincial Plate the first day. The rest were in too good company. The Hutt Park Stakes resolved itself into a match between Songster and Fallacy, and the race is best described by saying that the mare cantered over for the stakes, as the colt could not pace with her from the start. For the Jockey Club Handicap seven weighed out, and Guy Fawkes, who was pulled out again, was a hot favorite. He won again easily, a performance, which however good for him, and satisfactory to Mr Redwood, says but little for the rest of the field. The Consolation brought out a field of five, aud Princess Mary at 6st 91b was spotted at once, and made a hot favorite. She won easily enough, and though the race would have been closer but for the accident to the rider of B’lora McDonald, the result would have been the same.

I append results : Handicap Hukdle Back, of 100 sovs; second horse to receive 20 sovs from the stakes ; two miles and a-half, over eight flights of hurdles. Mr Brown’s ch g Te Whetu (by Traducer), 5 yrs, 9st 101 b (Watty) 1 Mr D. Fraser’s ch g St Albans, aged, lOst 61b ... •" ... (Campion) 2 Victor, 9st 61b ; Blue Jacket, 9st ; Satellite, 9st 21b ; Cloud, 9st 91bs, also ran. Betting—2 to 1 agst Tommy Dodd, 3to 1 agst Satellite and Te Whetu, 4 to 1 the rest. Blue Jacket was the first to show in front, followed by Te Whetu, Victor, and Satellite, Tommy Dodd and St Albans lying back. They ran thus till opposite the stand, when Victor led, but falling at the hurdle Te Whetu took up the running, followed by St Albans and Blue Jacket. They ran thus to the back of the course, when Satellite’s bolt was shot and cloud was done with. Victor, who had been remounted, began to make up his lost ground, and Tommy Dodd was pulled up at the fifth hurdle. Blue Jacket refused, and St Albans went to the front. From this out the race was left between Te Whetu and St Albans, the only other horse in the hunt being Victor, who was too far behind ever to get on terms with the leaders, A capital race ensued to the last turn, when Te Whetu came away and won as he pleased ; St Albans second.

After a little delay at the post, in which Treason’s colours were conspicuous, Mr Young got the lot well away together, Guy was the first to show in front, but ha was pulled back almost immediately, and Princess Mary cut out the work, followed by Morning Star, Glenary lying third, with Treason and Guy Fawkes next, Templeton and Tambourini bringing up the rear. At the end of the first mile Glenary was in command with Princess Mary in attendance, Tambourini next, with Guy a length behind. At the back of the course Templeton, Princess Mary and Glenary were disposed of and Guy went up to the leaders followed by old Tam. At the turn into the straight Guy led by a length, Tam, Treason, and Morning Star all being ridden in a cluster. From this to the finish the old horse held them all safe, winning comfortably by a short length, Tam beating Treason abont the same distance for second place, Morning Star fourth, and the rest beaten off. Before a mile had been covered, Stirabout and Yoltarine were done with, and at the back of the course Guy came through his horses, followed by Lady Mary ; the latter was, however,, quickly supplanted by Elsa, and Flora Macdonald, who was a length behind the favorite, followed him into the straight; Guy then came away and won with something in hand by a length ; Flora second and Elsa a good third. Time—2 min 60 secs. In this [race Lady of the Lake cannoned against a post, bolting into the straight and throwing Harris her rider, but he was not seriously injured. Time—lmin 62sec.

This brought a very successful meeting to a close. I must return my best thanks to Mr Kirby, the secretary, and the stewards, for their kindness to your representative.
