Melbourne, February S The cargo of New Zealand oats ex Moa was sold at full rates. A heavy demand for wheat is springing up, owing to the unfavorable advices from Hew Zealand. Auckland, February 8 During the passage of the Thnrliag Castle, on December 12th, ou the watch turning out, two were missing. It was suspected that they were broaching cargo. A boy was sent down the hold. He found a man’s hat. The fore hold was then closed, and a guard placed over it. Raps were beard below as a signal, and the hatch was raised and two men discovered with two bottles of grog in each hand, five more at their feet, and night lights. One of the men had actually handed two bottles to the mate, supposing it was his shipmate. The men were placed in irons until arrival. There were large quantities of hay and straw (for the twenty-eight fallow deer which have been safely landed cut of thirty-two shipped), within two yards of the broached brandy cases. Wellington, February 8
Bad accounts continue to come in from the country districts of damages by the recent flood. Houses and orchards are completely destroyed, and cattle, sheep, and horses swept away. One small farmer lost the whole of his little flock of 300 sheep. The Motueka district is the greatest sufferer, but a quantity of land hay been swept away ia the Wairnea by Waieti river, which has never been known so high before. The weather is still gloomy and threatening, but there is very iitr-’o rain. , /~ . . Wellington, February. 9.

At two o’clock this morning a lire occurred in Griffith’s fancy biscuit and confectionery manufactory, Parish street. . Notwithstanding the high wind, firemen were soon on the spot and saved the building, only the roof being burnt and the stock damaged. The machinery was saved. The insurance was one thousand pounds in the Standard. The losses are represented at one thousand pounds. • Selby, the English cricketer, ran Donovan, a local pedestrian, this morning—one hundred yards, for £3o—beating him by twenty yards The English cricketers leave per Eotorua to-morrow to play at Nelson, It is not yet definitely arranged whether or not they play at New Plymouth. The General Synod loss evening was in committee, Mr Carieton in the chair, on , the Appointment of Pastors Bill, which occupied the entire, evening up to 10.30. A lengthy debate arose on clausa 16, which was amended to the effect that a clergyman is at liberty to withdraw from a cure six months after giving notice to the Bishop of his intention, whether such resignation be accepted by the Bishop or not, provided the clergyman has given a second written - notice three months from the date of the former one. The remaining clauses were passed with some slight verbal alteration, After a great deal of discussion the Bill was then reported with amendments, and the third reading made an order of the day for Friday. On the motion of Archdeacon Williams the memorial of the trustees of Hawke’s Bay trust was referred to the committee on trusts. Mr Acland obtained leape to bring in a Bill to amend statute No 2, which was read a first time. Archdeacon Stock obtained leave to biing in a Bill to alter words in schedule attached to the constitution, clause 5, term not exceeding twenty-one years to bring them into agreement with words in instructions to trustees, clause 3, for not more than sixty years,” The Bill was read a first time. Archdeacon Maunsell moved the second reading of a Rill for amending statute 21, Some discussion ensued, and the debate was adjourned until immediately after that on the Constitution Interpretation Bill. The Synod adjourned till 11.15. This afternoon the business was wholly formal. Balclutha, February 8.
The weather is showery, but the river continues falling, and all danger has passed. The island of Inchclutha continues half covered with back water. Great damage has been done to the crops. Only one mail has arrived from Dunedin since Monday, and great annoyance is felt. Dunedin, February 9.
At a meeting of the Taicri Council yesterday, it was resolved to bring the whole of the Counties Act into operation. The total valuation of the county is £124,585. It was decided not to allow the chairman a salary. A case involving a breach of the Oyster Fisheries Act, 18(1(1, was heard yesterday at the police court. The case was dismissed as neither defendant nor his servants had any knowledge of die receipt of oysters. Business has been quite at a stand still during the week, owing to the Hoods, which have done incalculable damage all over the province. In the absence of transactions quotations cannot be given, but no doubt best samples of the new crop will command higher prices than could have been looked for prior to the disastrous floods above alluded to. The store market remains unaltered. [

(From a correspondent of the Press ') Timaru, February 8. Another meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was hold to-day. The following telegram was read in reply to a telegram sent by the Board to London asking whether sir John Coode would bo prepared to carry out the harbor works in Timaru, as recommended by him, at the cost named in his report London, f? Ist. January,—Goode abroad ; return March ; will then reply.” For the Board’s vested account the tender of the National Bank was accepted. A letter was read from Mr Maxwell Berry, of Dunedin, stating that he could inform the Board of a firm in England who would carry out the breakwater and lend the money required for the work and that it was now available. The letter was acknowledged.
