MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, Feb&uary 9. (Before G, L. Hellish, Esq, R.M., and Dr Deamer, J.P.) - Drunk and Disorderly.— Thomas Henderson, who had been several times before the Court on a similar charge, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labor. An inebriate, who appeared for the lirst time, was fined ss, and Is cab-hire. Lunacy from Drink.—Benjamin Taylor, arrested on above charge, was remanded to Lyttelton for eight days, Larceny.— Edward Butt and John Mallett were charged on warrant with having stolen two casks containing a quantity of passengers luggage from the emigration depot. Detective ISTeill stated that he visited the house the previous day in which both of the accused lived at Waltham. Found there .three large carpets, three blankets, three small carpets, one tablecloth, one coat, one bag two casks, and one feather bed. These articles Lad been identified by Mr Robert Painter, who was present while the search was being made, after which witness arrested the men. The goods were in use about the house, Mr Painter, called, stated he lived at th® Addington barracks, and had arrived by the ship Waipa. Both of the accused were passengers by the same vessel. Identified the articles produced as portion of witness’s luggage which had been received at the depot -oifthe morning of last Friday fortnight, and were missed the same evening. Accused had no authority to take the goods. The value of the wholo articles taken would be about £l3; those in Court would not perhaps fetch more at auction than about £5. When he and the detective went to the house, Butt said he had some goods belonging to witness. In reply to his Worship, the witness said the casks were not addressed. In reply to the Bench the accused, Butt, said the man Mallett knew nothing whatever about the goods. He (Butt) had taken the casks, believing them to belong to the doctor, whom he had assisted on the voyage. After he had them in use he then fancied ithey belonged to Mr Painter, His Worship discharged Mallett, and sentenced Butt to one month’s imj risonment with hard labour.
