NEWS OF THE DAY.

Catholic Schoolroom.— A concert and dramatic entertainment will be given this evening at the Barbadoes street schoolroom. Drainage Question. A preliminary meeting re this question, will be held this evening at the Lower Heathcote Library, at 7.30. Drainage Board Bates.— lt is intimated elsewhere that all Drainage rates must be paid on or before the 19th inst. After that date steps will be taken for their recovery, Cricket. —A general meeting of cricketers will beheld at Warner’s Hotel, this evening, at 8 o’clock, to elect three members for the All-England selection committee, when a large attendance is expected.

The Autumn Meeting.— The entries for the Great Autumn Handicap, to be run at the Autumn Meeting of the C.J.C., closed yesterday, and resulted in the respectable number of thirty-eight horses showing on paper.

Shorting. —Owing to the inclemency of the weather the Tuapeka races have been postponed to the Bth and 9th March next. It will also be seen by our telegrams that the date of the Wellington meet has been altered to Friday and Saturday next.

Board of Education.— The Board met yesterday for the first time in their new board room which is situated in the octagon tower. It has been very handsomely fitted, but the acoustic properties of it are simply wretched, it being impossible to distinguish what is being said although quite close to.the speaker Normal School, —An important report from the committee appointed to confer with Mr Howard and the Board of Examiners respecting the utilisation of the Normal school for the training of teachers was brought up at the Board of Education yes* terday. It will be found in our report of the proceedings.

Horticultural Society,— A committee meeting was held last evening in Warner's Hotel, Mr E, C. J. Stevens in the chair. It was resolved that the autumn show be held on March 7th. Messrs H. R. Webb, J. Low, and Clark were appointed judges for pot plants and cut flowers, and Messrs Sisson, T. Robson, E. B. Collins for fruit and vegetables. Messrs G. Miln and W. Kerr were appointed stewards. After the transaction of some routine business the meeting adjourned. Canterbury College.—A special meeting of the Board of Governors was held this morning, to consider a letter from the Government, relative to the establishment of a School of Mines in connection with the College, and also a communication from the Registrar of the University as to the Medical School. A report from the College committee recommending the establishment of a School of Mines was read, and also a report from Professors Von Haast and Bickerton upon the resources of the College for the undertaking of the work. After some discussion the Board adopted the report of the committee as read. With regard to the Medical School, Dr Coward stated that Dr Turnbull and himself had been elected as a committee by the Medical School, to confer with the Board of Governors as to their intentions. It was resolved that the chairman of the Board of Governors confer with the committee of the Medical School as to the establishment of the same, and report at the next meeting of the Board.
