From the glare of the fire it was seen to be in a southerly direction, and turned out to be a large house occupied by Mr Thomson, situate at the junction of Colombo street and the South belt, and known as Czar House. The engines and brigade under Mr Superintendent Harris were quickly on the spot, the Deluge arriving first, but the Dreadnought was the first to get water, and to begin work The Extinguisher arrived about live minutes after with the hook and ladder company. Though the brigade was speedily on the spot, it was seen that to attempt to save the house, in which the fire broke out, was useless. The wind being from the S.W. blew the flames towards the cottages, adjoining fronting on the belt. An unoccupied house belonging to the estate of the late Mr Buchanan, was the first to catch and soon succumbed, the brigade having a very hard fight to prevent the spreading of the fire to the next one occupied by Mr Davidson, which was threatened with destruction for some time. However the further spread of the fire was checked after the burning of the house belonging to the Buchanan estate. Nothing was saved from Mr Thomson's, and the origin of the fire is unknown. Neither of the houses burnt were insured.
