ADVANCE TO THE GOVERNMENT. Sydney, February 2. It is understood that the New Zealand Government has secured an advance of half a million from the Bank of Few South Wales for two years on favorable terms. THE CABLE CONFERENCE. Sydney, February 3. The cable conference closed to day. The following amongst other resolutions are carried —“ That the several Governments of South Australia, Queensland, and Western Australia be invited to open negotiations for the construction of cables connecting their several colonies with Singapore or Ceylon; and the Government of New Zealand for the construction of a cable from that colony to the United States;” “that in such negotiation the Government of New Zealand enter into communication with the Government of the United States for the purpose of procuring their consent to contribute to the payment of any subsidy that may be payable in respect of the same and “ further, that in all negotiations of the several Governments the necessity of procuring a reduction of the present tariff rates be especially kept in view, the maximum rate being 6s per word.” INTE EPROVIN CIAL. The Government have received from the Agent-General the following immigration advices by the San Francisco mail. On the llth of November the Wiltshire sailed for Lyttelton with 282 souls; on the 28th November, Oxford, for Auckland, with 239 ; on the 18th, the Loch Dee, for Otago, with 17, who were landed sick at Weymouth from the Hurunui; on the 20th, the Hurunui from Plymouth with 170. Twenty-eight were landed at Plymouth, and are to leave by the Oarnatic for LytteTon about December 9th. Thirty-one immigrants insisted on leaving the Hurunui. The following vessels are engaged to take immigrants ; —Fernglen, for Hawke's Bay, December 6th. Northampton, for Nelsop, Wellington, and Westland. The above completes Government requirements for the year. All advertisements have been withdrawn, and the staff reduced, Wellington, February 3, It rained heavily the greater part of the night, and is raining still. The -weather is thick and unpromising. Mr Greening, driver of one of Mr Hastwoll’s Wairarapa coaches, and well known in Canterbury, was last night presented with two testimonials and a purse containing £52, There was a largo crowd present. Dunedin, February 2. At a meeting of the Milton Pottery Com pany this afternoon the balance sheet showed a loan of £538, and it was resolved to wind up the company. Twenty-two cricketers will probably play the All England Eleven at Dunedin. The match committee has already selected Millington and Nichols (Oamaru), Downes (Lawrence), and Everest (Palmerston), and twenty four others have been chosen to practice for the event. The Hawea arrived at noon. The repairs to the valve will occupy some days, so the Taiaroa will be despatched to-morrow in her stead. She tranships at Wellington to the Taupo on Tuesday, and the latter returns North. {From a correspondent of the Press ) Oamaru, February 2, The train leaving Oamaru for Timaru at 4.30 broke down last night on the south side of the Waitak; bridge, The cause of the breakdown was the melting of the flameplay, owing to the shortness of water in the boiler. The water remaining in it then pat the fires out, and the engine came to a standstill. The passengeis had to stop three or four hours without any provisions, except what they got from a shepherd’s hut for the ladies and children. An engine despatched from Oamaru took the train on. The engine driver is suspended. An earthquake last night at Kaksnui, seven miles from here, shook down some chimneys. It is raining heavily to-day, and those excursionists who remained are unable to get to see suburbs and district.
