CITY COUNCIL.
Wednesday, January 31. The meeting adjourned from Monday last was held at the Council Chambers. Present —His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Ick, Nathan, Thomson, Turner, Hobba, Jones, and Hawkes. The Mayor said that as that was an adjourned meeting it would not be necessary to read the minutes, as they could begin where they had left off last sitting. Cr Thomson desired to refer to a vote of £5 which he learnt had been granted to the sports committee after he left on Monday evening last. There had been no mention of this matter on the notice paper, and ho understood when the £6 ss, labor incurred by the Council in erecting the grand stand and preparing the ground, had been remitted that sum was to stand in lieu of the Council’s annual donation. At the time he had expressed a hope that the usual vote might in the future take another form to that presented, so that the Council might be made aware of their whole liability, and though not desiring to raise further opposition, he trusted in future that any business entailing the voting of money should appear on the notice paper. The Mayor explained that the sports committee were under the impression the labor would be given gratuitously and believed the practice hitherto of voting them £5 would be adhered to this time. As he had before said, these sports were instituted for the benefit of the public, and the Council having approved of the amount being paid, he had instructed its being done. Cr Ick said the surveyor had prepared specifications for asphalting the city, which would be laid before the Council. A letter had been received from a Melbourne firm on the subject, and the works committee had telegraphed asking that the price and all particulars might be forwarded. The city surveyor then read the specifications. After some discussion, it was decided to hold over consideration of the specifications until a reply had been received from Melbourne, when a special meeting will be called to discuss the whole scheme. After some remarks, the Council went into committee to consider a number of letters that had been received from cabmen, asking that the refusal of their licenses might be reconsidered. Each letter was read and discussed and compared with a report supplied to the Council, after which it was decided to refuse the licenses applied for. The Council resumed, and the Mayor reported what had been done in committee. The action taken by the committee was adopted. Owners, and conductors’ licenses were considered. A number were granted, and others declined.
