The London avool sales, which closed on December 3rd, will long be remembered by all the trade, owing to the rapid and enormous advance in all sorts. The sales closed at the highest quotation, and a firm tone. There is every indication oil a consumption on a large scale.

A man named Rodgers, alias Roger Armstrong, of Wangarei, has confessed to the murder of a miner known rb Bed Bill, at the Thames, in 1867. Charles Lowe, now resident at Auckland, states that Bed Bill and another man lived in a tent near him. The former had plenty of money. The body was found by his mate in a lame waterhole 14ft deep, about half full of water. There were Soger marks all round the sides in the soit mud, a* of a man struggling to get out. The corner of the waterhole was close to the track from Grabamstown, No money was produced at the inquest. Red Bill's mate disappeared afterwards from the district. A young man named Frank Messiter, formerly postmaster and telegraphist at Rakaia, was arrested yesterday and brought up this morning on a chargo of purloining letters. Dunedin, January 30. The City Council now invite designs for new municipal buildings, to be erected on a site fronting the Octagon in Moray place. The designs are to be so prepared that when all are contemplated, and parts of the building are erected, they shall form a complete and uniform whole at a cost of £30, : 00. Dunedin, January 31. At the City Council yesterday a charge of maltreatment v/as preferred against the master of the Fever Hospital, and the sanitary committee is to investigate the the matter. A special meeting will be held next Tuesday, to consiucr the new Municipal Act. Tenders are invited for new municipal buildings for Dnnedin ; present cost £7OOO ; eventual total cost, £30,000. The Otago Education Board has received 383 G volumes, valued at £IOOO, from Great Britain, for the public and school libraries. The Dunedin Harmonic Society has amalgamated with the new Choral Society, which promises to be very successful. The third annual meeting of the Imperial Building Society was held last evening. The report showed a net balance of £555 15s 7d for the year. Mrs Scott Siddons is playing to splendid houses at the Princess's Theatre, and Baker and Farran opened to good business at the Queen's last night.
