The press considers that the European powers are bound to enforce the demands made by the Conference. At a great Tory meeting, held at Liverpool, Lord Northcote, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, insisted that it wag to the interest of England that peace should be conserved, and that it was that feeling which guided the Government in their policy, with regard to the Eastern Question. He denied the charges made that there was any jealous feelings towards Russia. Such statements were only calculated to hamper any efforts at intervention on behalf of the Christians of the Turkish provinces. The Government carefully avoided any false policy of coercsion and thought the Porte had acted unwisely in rejecting the proposals, but admitted that the Porte was free to choose its own course, No European power would be justified in considering their rejecting the proposals as an insult, Mr Assheton Cross, the. There are numerous entries for the Auck land regatta which is expected to be the best held in Auckland for some years. On the arrival of the English cricketers this morning at the Onehunga wharf, they were met by a drag with six greys, a four horse drag and a band of musicians. The three miles challenge race between the Black Diamond and the Danger whaleboats came off at 8 o’clock this morning. Poet Chalmers. January 29. Arrived—The Albion Company’s ship Canterbury, from London, eighr-y days out, with 2000 tons cargo, nineteen passengers. On toe 18ib of December George Bowling, AB, had a fit and fell overboard from the starboard for'yatdann. The ship was going lour knots. J bn Sawbere, quartermaster, jumped off the forecastle head, dived, and caught Bowling’s hair, and succeeded in putting a lifebuoy over him, Bowling was taken on board, and remained unconscious for nearly an hour, Arrived—New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Otaki, from London, ninety days rut, with 108 passengers, TOGO tons cargo. She had a terrific pale on the 26th iorfc from SW. The ship was pooped, and ran through ;he ga’e close reefed.
