The Agent-General for New South Walee read a paper yesterday before the Colonial Institute on "The Fallacies of Federation of British Colonies denied,” Mr J. D. Wood. Mr bamuel D nrenport, Mr Hyndam, Sir J, Vogel, Mr Westgarth, aud the Hon J. L Montefiore, spoke on the question. The discussion stands adjourned. Of the Christchurch drainage loan £ MO,OOO has been subscribed, at an average of 101, INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, January 26. The Kaipara railway will be commenced immediately by letting off of ten miles from the Newmarket end. The murderer Curtin received the iatimatian of his early execution with calmness. He declared his innocence of any intention to kill. The case of McArthur, Shera, and Co occupied the Supreme Court to-day. The plaintiff Shera is out of the partnership, and claims £ 12,000. The other side allege that when the affairs are wound up Shera will be brought in a debtor to the firm. Mr McArthur, of London, ia a creditor to the extent of £IOO,OOO, and there are no other creditors of importance. The Court has appointed a person to value the estate and adjust the partnership concerns Richard Badham has been fined £25 for a breach of the Customs regulations, by making a false declaration, Intention to defraud was not alleged, but the invoice on which the declaration was made was proved to be incomplete. The Harbor Board have determined on the enlargement of the dock. Southern flour is quoted at £ls ; Adelaide £l7 ; pollard, £6 10s ; oatmeal, £l3 ; potatoes, £4 ; maize, 4s 6d ; oets, 2s 9d ; hams and bacon ; southern, lOd ; cheese, 10d : butter, 101 to Is; provincial cheese, 5d to 6d. Alexandra, January 26. Tewheoromet Tawhaio and Mauuhiri yesterday at Kopua, Te Ngakau acted under the orders of Tawhaio in stopping the Pirongia survey, and in warning r.he laupo road party. Dr Pollen is expected here on Tuesday next to meet and confer with Manuhiri. Wellington, January 27. The Hinemoa leaves Dunedin with the prize-firing representatives on February 12th ; Lyttelton, February 14th ; Wellington, February 15th ; Picton and Nelson, February 17th. She will arrive at Hokitika on February 18th, and the firing commences on the 19th, The range is about five miles from the nearest telegraph station. Dunedin, January 27.
The half-yearly meeting of |the Colonial Bank will be held on Wednesday. The net protit for the half-year, after deducting all salaries and expenses of management, rent, and other charges, and after making full provision for bad and doubtful debts and interest accrued on deposits, amounts to £10,264 16s sd, to which must be added a balance of profit and loss account carried over from 30th June last of .£651 3s. The total available for division is £13,915 19s sd, as may be resolved on by the meeting. The directors recommend that it shall be appropriated as follows : —To increase the reserve fund (which will then be £10,000) £1738, to payment of a dividend at the rate of 6 per cent per annum on the paid up capital of the Bank on 31st December, £9774 7s 2d, making a total of £11,512 7s 2d. The balance of £2403 12s 3d is to be carried forward to profit and loss new account, for the current half-year.
