NEWS OF THE DAY.
R.M. Court. —There were no criminal cases brought before the Resident Magistrate this looming. M.G.C.O, v U. 0.0 o.—This match will be continued on Saturday next at 2.30 p.ra., by which time all players engaged therein are particularly requested to be upon the ground. The Eastern Question. —As will be seen by the London cable telegram published by us to day, the Conference on the Eastern question hq,3 concluded without arriving at my definite settlement of the questions referred to it, Wesleyan Home Missions —The annual tea and public meeting in connection with the above will be held at the Durham Street Church to-morrow evening, commencing at six o’clock. The meeting will be addressed by several of the ministers who are at present attending the conference, St Paul’s, Papanui —The annual parish festival in connection with above church will take place to-morrow, There will be Divine Servipa with Holy Communion at II a.m, at which the Rev T. Flavell, incumbent of Merivale, will preach. A public tea meeting and entertainment will be held at 6 p.m, in the schoolroom. Canoe Race at Kaiapol— On Monday evening a canoe race between Messrs T, Dudson and J, Peirin, arising out of a dispute as to Perrin’s powers as one of the representative crew in the Cam at the Interprovincial regatta, for £5 a side, was paddled on the Walmakariri. The canoeists had the use of canoes belonging to Mr B. H. Mathews and Dr Ovenden. It was arranged that the course should be straight up the river for a distance of two miles. Mr C, E Dudley effected a good start, and Perrin went away with a strong lead, improving the distance between himself and his rival to the finish at the Northern Store Wharf, coming in a winner with a distance of a quarter of a mile,
Teachers’ Examination —The annual examination of teachers commenced yesterday morning at the Normal School. Bighty-two candidates presented themselves, and the examinations were conducted by the Board of Examiners. They will be continued daring this week up to Friday, inclusive, and in the optional subjects for a portion of next week. Found Drowned. —A man named Aleck Black was found drowned in a ditch a short distance from Amberley yesterday evening, by a man named Amos. His coat and swag being found on the edge of the ditch lead<i to the impression that the man committed suicide, although there was but about 9in of water in the ditch. The police were communicated with, and the body was removed to McLean's Hotel, where an inquest will be held.
Drapers’ and Clothiers' Association. —The annual meeting of members was held last evening at the Foresters’ Hall, Mr 0. M, Gray in the chair. The reports’of the secretary and treasurer were read, tha latter showing the funds of the Association to be in a very satisfactory state. Both reports were adopted as read. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring officers. Messrs W. C. Falconer and E. Bundle were unanimously re-elected secretary and treasurer respectively. A committee was elected to represent the various houses in the trade, after which several new members were proposed for election. It was suggested that an annual dinner should be held to which employers would be invited, but after some discussion it was eventually decided to leave the matter in the hands of the committee. The meeting then adjourned,
Wesleyan Conpeeence. The Conference met yesterday morning at the usual time. After devotional exercises, the Bev A. B. Fitchett moved that in consideration of the years and experience of the Rev J. Armitage, and his special services to the Church for many years, his probation be ended after two years instead of four, and that he be received into the full ministry at once. The motion was lost. The usual examination into character and doctrinal teaching was then proceeded with, and enquiry was made, when it was found that no objection was made against any minister. The afternoon session was devoted to consideration of the appointments of the ministers for the ensuing year; the suggestions made being remitted to the stationing committee. The recommendations of the various districts, with regard to the training of candidates and probationers, were considered, as also recommendations on general subjects.
Attempted Suicide. A man named Brown Harris, a gardener, residing in Carlton place, North belt, attempted to commit suicide yesterday afternoon by taking poison. About four o’clock he went into the Carlton Hotel, and asked for some brandy and soda. After being served with this, he called for another, which was, however, refused him, as his manner seemed to be somewhat peculiar. Taking advantage of the landlord, Mr Plummer, being engaged for a moment, he took up the bottle which contained some of the soda water, and on Mr Plummer turning round he observed him putting some white powder into it. He at once rushed over to him and caught hold of the bottle, but not before Harris had succeeded in swallowing some of the contents. He then observed a blue paper on the counter labelled “ salts of lemon, poison.” A trap was at once procured, and the man conveyed to the police depSfc, but was immediately taken on to the hospital, where emetics were administered, and last night he was pronounced to be out of danger. It seenm that Harris had a case in the Resident M agistrate’s Court during the morning, in which he sued a person for wages, and his wife subsequently stated that he threatened to do something to himself if he did not gain it. Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. —A general meeting of this club was held last night at Warner’s Hotel, Mr J, W. Davis was voted to the chair. The hon sec (Mr W. Tosswill) stated that the committee had arranged to have the annual sports on Saturday, the 10th February next, on the Agricultural Show Grounds, The following officers were elected for the day—Patron, Mr Wm Rolleston ; president, Mr W. H. Wynn Williams ; judges, Messrs 0. 0. Corfe and R. J. S. Harman ; starters, Messrs F. Pavitt and J. W. Davis ; handicappers, Messrs C. □. Corfe, F. H. Digby and S. P, Andrews j timekeepers, Messrs Stead and Gunderson ; stewards, Messrs Brewster, J, Wachsmau, H. Black, H. McCardoll, T. S. Sweet, T. Gordon, A. M. Oilivier, J. 8. Monck, M. Smith, W. Tosswill and W. Hartland. It was resolved that the entries for the various events must be sent in to one of the hon secs at Warner’s Hotel, not later than 8 o’clock on Tuesday, 6th February. It was also resolved that the two miles steeplechase be struck out and a quarter mile handicap inserted instead. The following gentlemen were elected members of the club—Messrs A, Mathias, G.
