There are 40,000 lawyers in the United States, of whom 198 are in CongreßS. We have received from the publishers, Messrs Gordon and Gotch, the " Australasian A. B. C. Bail way and Boad Guide" for January. It has bten decided that the crime of Captain Keyn, of the Franconia, wno was convicted of manslaughter for running down the Strathclyde, does not come within English jurisdiction. Boupell, the ex-M. P. for Lambeth, who was recently discharged from Portland prison, has applied for employment as city missionary, and it is probable his application will be accepted. During the last few years Boupell has been engaged in work in the prison of a missionary character. He is anxious to continue in freedom the kind of work whioh he began while in prison. The Orchestra says : —We have to record the death of Mrs Bobinson, which took place at Hadleigh Hall, Suffolk, She was better known as Mrs Alfred Shaw, a celebrated contralto in her day. When Miss Postans she was a student at the Royal Academy under Bir George Smart ; she afterwards studied in Italy, and on her return to England sang at Covent Garden with Adelaide Kemble in " Semiramide" and other operas. She also sang the original oontralto part in Benedict's " Bride of Vanice," and made a great success in the well known sing, "By the Bad sea wave." Mendelssohn was grea'ly struck with her, and under his direction she sang at the Leu sic concerts. With the single exception of Mdme Sainton-Dolby, no English con« tralto has since attained to Mrs A. Shaw's pitch of excellence.
