2o tlie Editor of the Globe. Sib, —Allow me, in the name of the Seaman's Union, a little spaca in answer to "Portonian's humourous, but kindly remarks on our procession, and rather heterogeneous band. The only apology that we can make is the haste with which it was got up, and also want of funds. Our main object is to keep up the old standard of wages, £6 per mouth. I am well aware that freights are low at present, but the grain season will soon be in, and then the freights must riye When we ask £6 I think we are not asking too much, in fact we are not paid in proportion to other working men connected with shipping. Considering the price of clothing, boarding, and other requisites of seamen in New Zealand, I think you will say with me we are only asking a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. By kindly inserting these few remarks you will oblige the Union, and your humble servant, SHELLBACK. January 21st, 1577.
