The announcement by the Chairman of the Drainage Board at the meeting this morning that Mr. Carruthers would be prepared in a few days to submit his plans, will, we are sure, be read with satisfaction. The Board having before it the complete scheme will be able to carry out many necessary and important works, which have been delayed until the complete plan of the drainage system was brought up. From the Chairman’s remarks also we gather that the Board will be in a position to take in hand a portion of the work at once and call for contracts. This portion, we presume, will be that served by the Ferry road drain now in course of construction, and will include Waltham, Philipstown, and the low-lying part south of the railway. This will also enable the Board to close the South drain, and remove at once and for ever one of the greatest causes of typhoid fever from our midst. We hope that when the Board have the plans before them they will lose no time in practically getting to work. By so doing they may be able to complete that portion of the scheme to which we have referred before winter sets in. If this be done, and the details settled for an active pushing forward in the spring and summer of the heavier part of the scheme, the Board will have done good service to the people of Christchurch as a whole.
