London, January 9, At tl*e meeting of the Conference on Monday Lord Salisbury refused to admit the arguments of the Turkish delegates, who were equally persistent in rejecting the conditions proposed by the representatives of the European Powers, and entered into a debate on the question of the guarantees, especially with reference to the proposed International Commission; AUSTRALIA. Auckland, January 11; A special meeting of the Harbor Board has been called to consider the question of the enlargement of the dock. The dock under construction has only twelve feet on the sill, and it would be necessary to dredge a channel five hundred feet long.
A preliminary meeting was held to-day of the commission on hospital and lunatic asylum. The Mayor was appointed chairman. The proceedings are private. The quarantined passengers per the Australia have been released.
The Grand Lodge last evening finally approved of the action of the English Templars on the negro question, and decided to support them. Sailed—Flirt for Lyttelton, via Mercury Bay. Auckland, January 12. The Grand Lodge, 1.0.G.T., has agreed that the capitation tax be 4d per head, to be raised voluntarily. Election of officers— Grand Worthy Councillor, Johnson, Wellington ; Grand Worthy Vice-Templar, Tregear, Taranaki; Secretary, O. S. Sellis, Auckland ; Treasurer, Le Roy, Auckland ; Marshal, Fairbrother, Wellington. At a meeting of licensed victuallers yesterday, notice of motion was given for the next meeting in favor of forming an Insurance Association to protect hotel-keepers against exorbitant rates. Grahambtown, January 11.
At a conference of tho Borough and County Councils last night, a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of borough and county amalgamation. Grahambtown, January 12. The County Council have voted their chairman a salary of £2OO a year, and one guinea per day for expenses while travelling on county business. Wellington, January 11.
His Honor the (Juief Justice left by the Government yacht Hinemoa this afternoon for Lyttelton, to attend a special sitting of the Court of Appeal. At a meeting of cricketers last night it was decided so accept Mr Bennett’s terms, and the English cricketers play here on or about 10th February. Twenty-two are going into practice. Nelson, January 11. An interesting case, aiising out of a county election, was heard before Mr Broad, U.M, to-day. Mr Joshua Bird was elected for Motueka Riding, Waimea County. Mr White, the defeated candidate, petitioned against his return, on the ground that his nominators were not duly qualified electors. Thereupon Mr Bird, aware of the validity of the objection, petitioned that the election might be declared void altogether, principally on the ground that sufficient notice of election was not given by the Returning Officer, also that Mr White’s nomination was as illegal as his own. Both petitions were heard, and the election declared void. A committee has been formed to arrange for the accommodation of visitors at the regatta. Telegrams should be sent to the secretary of the regatta committee, and the best possible arrangements will be made. The Auckland and Thames crews and boats arrived per Hawea this morning. The West Coast boats are expected at the end of the week. Greymouth, January 11. In the coal pit of the Heath Coal Company they struck the main seam of coal yesterday in their shaft at a depth of 246 feet. Port Chalmers, January 11. Sailed— N.Z S. Co’s ship Mataura, for London, with a cargo valued at £107,000. Port Chalmers, January 12. The Mataura returned to port with the loss of the starboard anchor. JThe cable parted, and the port anchor was let go, but come up without the fluke. She gets fresh anchors, and will probably sail to-day. Dunedin, January 11.
The Taieri County Council met in Dunedin to day. The consideration of bringing the whole of the Act into force was postponed for a month.
A serious accident occurred this morning at 8 30, near the Southern Cemetery, where excavations are being carried on by means of prison labor. There were about thirty-five men present, and a shot was put in atop of a cliff about 50ft high. The men were then removed to a distance of 100 yards. One shot going off, 1500 tons of earth were displaced. Fragments were scattered through the air in all directions ; part of the shower fell upon a group of prisoners and laborers, knocking four of them down. One prisoner had his leg broken, and another was rendered insensible from a severe wound on the back of the head; the other two were not much injured. Another accident occurred at the same place during the afternoon, by which a prisoner had the flesh stripped from the bone of hie leg for several inches. Dunudin, January 12.
The New Zealand Silver Mining Company’s prospectus will be issued in a few days. The company’s mine is situate near the Mount Ilanigtoto mine, and it is anticipated that there will be a great demand for the shares. There are to be 8000 shares at £5 each, and it is expected that 5000 will be taken up immediately in Hokitika ; the head office will be in Dunedin. Wheat continues nominal in the absence of any offering ; oats are saleable at 2s 2d to 2s 3d per bushel for good feed, up to 2s 4d for prime milling ; barley feed is scarce, and wanted at from 2s 6d to 2s 9d per bushel; malting, 3s 9d to 4s 3d; flour, £ls; in small bags, £ls 10s; bran, £4. (From our own correspondent .) Dunedin, January 12. The Otago cricketers left this afternoon ; Mr Paramor has been elected captain. Mr Kva goes up on Tuesday, and will umpire for Otago, Mr A. Cohen, scorer. (From a correspondent of the Press.) Timabu, January 10. Mr Bradley’s crew of Timaru men have entered for the Nelson Begatta. They are now on their way there with one outrigger, which they purchased in Christchurch. One of the events they will pull in is the £l6O Four-oared Interprovincial Champion Race.
