CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, January 9. (Before G. L, Hellish, Esq., R.M., and Dr Deamer, J.P.) Drunk and Disorderly. —Archibald Graham was lined 10s. Ellen Jordan, a very old offender, was sentenced to twelve mouths’ imprisonment with hard labor. Two inebriates were fined 10s and 20s respectively. Embezzlement. Arthur Glenfield was charged, on remand, with having embezzled various sums of money belonging to his employer, Thomas Talmer, dairyman, at the

Sandhills. Accused had been in the employ of the prosecutor since November last, his duties being to carry round and serve milk, and collect money from the various customers, which he was to hand on his return home to Mrs Palmer. He left his employment abruptly on Thursday last, and after he had gone it was found that in November last he had been paid 10s 2d by Mrs Esther ColHett, Tuam street, for milk supplied; 10s 8d by Miss Mary Macfarlane, Gloucester street; and in December, 5s by Mrs Emily Brooker, St. Asaph street. -Receipts for these payments in accused’s handwriting were produced, and Mrs Palmer stated that she had not received any portion of this money. Charges of having received £1 3s 4d from Mr Wyatt in December ;i £1 14s from Mrs Sarah. Fawcptte, St Asaph street; 13s 9d from Mr W. Hoskins, Tuam street, and 6s Id from,Mrs P. Heddell, East town belt, during the month of November were also preferred against accused. The receipts for these payments were produced bearing accused’s signature, and Mrs Palmer stated that she had not received either of these amounts. In reply to the Bench, accused said he was sometimes not asked for money by Mrs Palmer for three or four days at a time. His Worship told accused that as this was the first conviction he would receive a lighter sentence than he otherwise would have done. Taking the whole as three charged committed within the last six months, he would be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor on each charge, each sentence to take effect at the expiration of the other, or three month s|in all.
