THE CARDIGAN CASTLE PLACED IN QUARANTINE.
THIRTEEN DEATHS, This fine ship arrived at one o’clock this morning from London. We arc sorry to say there has been much illness aboard, no less than thirteen passengers having died, diphtheria and enteric fever being amongst the complaints that have proved fatal. As there are still two cases of illness aboard, one patient suffering from enteric fever, and the others from tonsilitis, the latter case being exceptionally severe, the vessel was at once placed in in quarantine, and, Mr March, arriving by the 9,30 a.m. goods train from Christchurch, and consulting with Dr Donald and Captain Gibson, arrangements were made for the immediate removal of the immigrants to the Quarantine Stations. Captain Davis, who commanded this fine ship on her former trip here, is still master, and the passage has occupied ninety-five days, but of course we are forbidden to go near the ship, and can give no further details at present. One case of suicide occurred, but we have no particulars.
