ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE. The annual meeting of ratepayers of the above district for the nomination of three members to serve on the Road Board was held yesterday at the Board office, Ferry road. There was a large attendance, and Mr S, Manning, chairman of the Board, presided. In the chairman’s remarks he stated that the accounts had been partially audited by the Government auditor, but in the absence of the late clerk, through illness, he could not give as full and satisfactory account as he would desire. So far as he could learn at present the total receipts for the year amounted to £6378 15s 7d, and the expenditure £5235 5s sd, leaving a credit balance of £1143 10s 2d. There was a cheque of £387 Is 7d to be received from the Colonial Treasurer, and the rates outstanding to end of year amounted to £664 6s 9d. That was all the information he could give at present, and it remained with those present to say whether the general business should be proceeded with or adjourned. After some discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Whitelaw, seconded by Mr T. D. Jones —“ That, after having heard the chairman’s remarks, this meeting proceed with the election of members to fill the vacancies on the Board, and that the general business stand adjourned until next meeting, to be called by the chairman at an early date.” Mr G. L. Lee, returning officer, then took the chair, and said he was prepared to receive nominations. The following gentlemen were nominated: Mr Frederick Jones, proposed by Mr S. Manning, seconded by Mr H. Sawtell. Mr Peter Kerr, proposed by Mr F. H. Brittan, seconded by Mr H. Sawtell. Mr W. Langdown, proposed by Mr H. Sawtell, seconded by Mr Whitelaw. Mr T. Olephane, proposed by Mr Tipping, seconded by Mr C. Ladd. Mr W Hawker, proposed by Mr H, Toomer, seur, seconded by Mr H. Thorne. Mr Francis Innes, proposed by Mr F. Joyce, seconded by Mr R, Beattie. The returning officer called for a show of hands in the order of the nominations, which resulted as follows ;—Jones, 12 ; Kerr, 17 ; Olephane, 10 ; Langdown, 18 ; Hawker, 14 ; Innes, 1. A poll was demanded by Mr Joyce on behalf of Mr Innes. The polling will take place to-day, at the Board office, between 9 a.m and 4 p.m. It was intimated that the clerk to the Board would be in attendance at the office to receive rates, to enable those who have not already paid to record their votes. AVON. The annual meeting of this Board was held yesterday at noon, Mr T. L. Laine, chairman of the Board, in the chair. There was a large attendance of ratepayers. The chairman read a statement of receipts and expenditure for the past year, which showed that the annual receipts amounted to £8360 17s 2d. The payments had been £7535 14a, leaving a credit balance of £B3l 3s 2d. The balance sheet of present liabilities and assets showed the former to be £4Bl 5a 6d, and the assets £3442 2a lOd. The accounts had been audited by Mr J. Ollivier, Government Auditor, and passed by him as correct. The chairman, as returning officer, read the notice relating to the election of three members in the place of Messrs Dickenson, Duncan, and Laine, and after reading the qualification of candidates, said he was prepared to receive nominations. The following gentlemen were then nominated : Mr W. Hinton, proposed by Mr McWilliams, seconded by Mr E. Corser. Mr P. Strouts, proposed by Mr H. Adams, seconded by Mr Slater. Mr G Dickenson, proposed by Mr J. L. Wilson, seconded by Mr Flesoher, Mr W. Munro, proposed by Mr J. Low, seconded by Mr J. Abbott. Mr W. Flescher, proposed by Mr J, L. Wilson, seconded by MrG. Dickenson. Mr E. Gorser, proposed by Mr W. Hinton, seconded by Mr B. Barker. Mr H. Deßourbel, proposed by Mr DeTroy, seconded by Mr E, Corser. The chairman called for a show of hands, with the following result Hinton, 7 ; Strouts, 6 ; Dickenson, 15 ; Munro, 10; Flescher, C; Corser, 5; Deßourbel, 4. A poll was demanded on behalf of Mr Strouts, and will be taken to-morrow, at the following places, between 10 a,m. and 4 p.m.; Bingsland school, Styx Mill, Road Board office, Papanui road.
