Westport County Council.— By telegram from Westport we learn that at the first meeting of the County Council to-day, it was resolved to adopt the entire Act. Christ's College.— The Church News —“ W, Herbert Williams, son of the Archdeacon of Napier, and Arthur Rhodes, ■ion of the late George Rhodes, Esq, of Timanqwere appointed senior Somes scholars by the warden and fellows of the college, on the report of the examiners appointed for the purpose, at the close of the recent annual examination. At the beginning of next term, or very shortly after, an important addition to the staff of ousters of the Grammar School is expected, Mr vV. E. W, Morrison, B.A, of Queen’s Coll., Oxford, having been appointed in England by the W. 0. Harris, acting under the authority of the governing body. No news ban as yet anived of the appointment of s, college tutor. Several applications had been made for the post, but Dr Vaughan and M:: Harris, to whom the appointment was delegated, had not yet been able to find a gentleman in all respects suitable. New Year’s Day, Akakoa.— ln addition to the usual athletic sports held on the beach, the New Year’s Day attractions consisted of a cricket match between the Akaroa and Okain’s Bay team, and a bazaar held in the Town Hall in aid of the Parsonage building fund. Of these the cricket match and the bazaar were the most attractive, indeed, throughout the evening the Town Hall was crowded to excess. The first event on the athletic sports card was a 300 ynrda race for men, this brought eight entries to the scratch, and after a very good and close race J. Suukell came in first and T. Lelievre second. Two boys’ races followed, lor which there were but three and four entries respectively. Number four on the programme was a 100 yards race for men, for this nice there j were six entries, and B. Shaw was the favorite, but owing to some mistake in starting he was out of the race from the beginning ; Sunkell and Lelievre occupied the same positions as in the first rfice. The three-legged race for men brought feur pairs on the ground, and was won by Frankish and Shaw. The high jump for boys was won by M. Daly, there being three competitors, while the men’s high jump (four entries) was taken by Frankish with a jump of 4ft 9jin, Kennedy winning seccnd prize, clearing Hi Biiu. The men’s hop, steu and jump produced seven entries, Kennedy taking first prize and M. Sullivan second. There were only two entries for ohe boys’ long jump, which was won by M. Dily clearing 13ffc sin. The men’s running ling jump was won by E. Lelievre, with I. Fahey second. A consolation race and standing jump for men concluded the spor:s on the beach. A boys’ swimming match was got up later in the day, which was won by M. Daly, although he was pressed closely by li. Munro, who only lost by half a length. Tae bazaar stores were presided over by liesdames Cooper, Denny, Fenton, Pearde, Eaughton, Noonan, and Funnel, assisted by tie Misses WagatafE, Mullen, Coles (2), Alport, and Newton. Upwards of £SO was token. A number of articles, especially thone of the greatest value, remained unsold, all of which will be disposed of without reserve by Mr Adams, auctioneer, next Tuesday.
