SYDNEY RACES. Sydney, January 1. TATTERSALL'S CUP. Viva 1 valetta 2 Melbourne... 3 Fourteen started. This was a grand race, and was won by a head. Time—3m 37£sec. INTERPROVINCIAL. Wellington, January 2. Diphtheria is very prevalent. Five children have died in one family alone. Dunedin, January 2. The Caledonian Gathering, which was commenced yesterday, at Kensington, was attended by about eight thousand people, and was the most successful ever held in Otago. The day was fine, and all the events were well contested. The principal item on the programme was the Caledonian Handicap of three distances, namely, 150 yards, 300 yards, and 440 yards, and for which prizes amounting in the aggregate to £76 were offered. The competitors included two well known Ballarat pedestrians, Bignell and Samson, who visited Dunedin as members of the fire brigade team. The race was a very, close affair, and resulted in Bignell being declared winner, with MacPherson second, and Nicholas third. Best time, 150 yards, 16 sees; 300 yards, sees; 440 yards, 56£ sees. The mile race was won by Burke, an Otago man, Brooks being second, and Samson of Ballarat third. Time 4 min 54£ sees. The two mile walking race was by no means equal to previous years, and was won by Carr. Time, 8 min 11 sees. Port Chalmers, January 2. Arrived—Ship May Queen, 105 days from London, with 1500 tons cargo and 24 passengers. She encountered a terrific cyclone in the Bay of Biscay on the 28th September last. The sea filled the deck and washed away the live stock, Thence had fine weather and strong breezes till December 7 th, when she met with a terrific westerly gale. Hove-to under close reefed topsails. The mate, Francis Oodolphin Boise, while loosing the fore-topmast stays, was washed overboard. No traces were seen of him. Next day Captain Tachell, while asleep, was thrown out of his bunk, and fractured his collar-bone. They passed a body in oilskin clothing on the 9th; made the Snares on the 26th ult; encountered a heavy northerly gale for 145 hours ; lost part of her bulwarks. Detective Dalton, of the London police, arrested a cabin passenger, Jackson, charged with embezzlement of £9OO, the property of Colney Hatch Company. A bank draft for £450 was found on him. Jackson was accompanied by his wife.
