MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, December 23. (Before G. L. Lee and W. Deamer, Esqs, J.P.’s) Drunk and Disorderly. —Mary Edwards, arrested for drunkenness, was fined ss. A female inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was dismissed. Violent Assault. —James McGill was charged on remand with violently assaulting Ellen Jordan, occasioning grievous bodily harm. Mr Izard appeared for the defence. Sergeant Beck repeated his evidence as to the arrest of accused in front of the Warwick Hotel on 30th Nov last. When arrested accused admitted being in the house in Lyttelton street on the night of the assault, but said he did not commit it. The prosecutrix gave evidence as to the assault, as also did Mary Welstead, and after Mr Izard had addressed the Bench, the prisoner was sentenced to threejmonths’ imprisonment ivith hard labour.
