The apathy displayed in connection with the County Elections seems to have extended to the Municipality of Christchurch as well. Considering the high and important position which the Mayor of Christchurch will occupy in the future, we would have thought there would have been any number of candidates for the honor. The people are not necessarily restricted to the members of the City Council in making a selection, as any ratepayer is open to the honour. But the public evidently do not trouble themselves greatly in the matter. Two candidates are now in the field, one of whom has been nominated by the members of the City Council. It is not our intention at present to discuss the respective merits of those gentlemen, but there can be no great difficulty, we should think, in arriving at a;decision. What we wish to point out is that the indifference displayed must not go the length of neglecting to poll when the day of election arrives. Every ratepayer should record his vote, so that the gentleman who is placed at the top of the poll may really be the deliberate choice of the majority of the burgesses.
