Auckland, December 9. In the sculling handicap to-day, the Auckland Bowing Olub's Fly beat the Spider by nearly a minute. At Hokianga the body of a chief named Wiremu has been neglected after death, and is entirely eaten by doge. The Presbyterian General Assembly has appointed a committee to request the Government that the Presbyterian church be represented on the senate of the New Zealand University. In reply to an overture from Ohrietchurch and Hawke's Bay upon the supply of ministers, the Assembly resolved that all presbyteries of the church be autho rised to appoint tutors to conduct in the form best suited to their respective circumstances, the theological studies of students looking forward to the Ministry. The Assembly has passed a resolution expressive of satisfaction at hearing of the progress of the Canterbury Church Extension Association. The Rev J. Robert von, of Melbourne, has accepted the pastoral charge of the Congregational Church, Auckland. Auckland, December 11. The American schooner Laval, from California to Adelaide, has put in in a leaky condition, making 2ft of water per hour. Her deck cargo has been thrown overboard. GrAHAMSTOwn, December 9. Considerable interest is being taken in the county election. Already four candidates are out for the Ohinemuri riding. All the seats in the County Council will probably be warmly contested. Mr McDonald, Dr Kilgour, and Mr Mac Nab are nominated for the mayorality. The maßter of the schooner Pairlie has been fined £5 to-day for carrying away the telegraph wires acroßS the Thames River. Wellington, December 11. The Tui has arrived, from Lyttelton. She was under sail the greater part of the night, having broken her shaft. Mr Hutchinson has been re-elected Mayor, without opposition. Dunedin, December 9 A quarrel occurred at Mosgiel O'Brien, lecturer for the American War Panorama, had his eye gouged by Stanley. He suffered severely, but will not lose his sight. Dissatisfaction is fait in this county at the maeper iu which, the elections are being
conducted. Many returning officers were •oo late in receiviug instructions to enable them to comply with the Act, and were not supplied with the Acts or forms of any kind, [n many cases the officers were instructed >y the Resident Minister to writeout a simple notice of the elections and post it up somewhere in their ridings. This was done at nidnight, and is the only notice large mattered country districts have received. $o Acts can be procured without sending to Wellington. The elections will be over before many of the public can now know anything about it. Blenheim, December 11. At ten last night Messrs Paul Bros' stables, at Moorland's, Spring Creek, was burnt down, including the valuable entire, True Briton, and some harness. Conqueror was saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss is £4OO. The insurance amounts to £2OO, in the South British. Port Chalmers, December 11.
The p.s. Coomerang has arrived from Chasland's Mistake, bringing Captain Calder, officers, and seamen of the s.s. Otago. The gold was recovered by Captain Calder, and landed before the party by the Coomerang reached. The ship still holds together. The petty officers and a constable were left at Chasland's Mistake, to prevent pillage. A court of enquiry will be held.
