In the grain market business transacted this week has been of an exceedingly limited nature, the chief feature being the continuous advance in wheat, prime samples of which are eagerly sought after by the millers up to 6s 3d. Flour continues to respond to the increased value of wheat, ann although quoted at £l6, little could be obtained at this figure, most millers holding for a further rise. Oats are firm at 2s to 2s 2d, but quiet, the retrograde movement lately experienced in the Australian market having for the present checked all speculation. Oatmeal continues in fair demand at late rates; bran and sharps are in good supply at £4 10s and £5 10s respectively. If the dairy market butter comes forward freely, sales being difficult to effect over 8d; cheese is at present little enquired for at Hams and bacon are unaltered at 0d bare, and 9}d cloth. Business in the import market has been brisk during the week. Sugars We have to report the quittance of fully 8000 pockets privately at advanced rates. Yellow counters, at £26 10s to £2B; yellow crystals. £29 to £3O 158*, white counters, £33 to £34; white crystals, £32 to £35. Holders of stocks are very farm in their quotations. Telegraphic advices have been received confirming the advance in Melbourne of £2 per ton on sugar; also of crushed loaf advancing to £36 per tonf.o.b, London. Teas—A few parcels of last season’s growth have been cleared oil at fair rates. We note that the Wagrieu has arrived at Port Chalmers from Foochow. A small parcel ex this vessel is for this market, and expected daily. Advices have been received of the sailing of the Kassa and Eunice for Melbourne in the beginning of October, these vessels bring 3500 packages for this market. Tobacco—Twists, in case, are In good demand at Is Bsd to Is 9d i.b.; several parcels have been quitted at these figures. We have not much to report in brandies, holders are firm In their prices, which remain at our last quotations. Wolit a ■chnapp’B—Good sales have been reported at22s 6d, i.b. Kerosene—We note the arrival of the Josephine at Port Chalmers. This vessel brings only 1650 cases for this market; quotations are nominal as stocks are almost nil. Corn sacks—A few inquiries have been made for this line; a little business has been done at 9a 6d per dozen, but holders are not auxious to quit at present. Woolpacks—We have nothing new to report in this line. Galvanised iron—A few sales have been recorded at £3l to £3llos lor best brands. Cement—We have no alteration to report in this line. Several small Bales have taken place in currants at 5d to sjd. Candles—Trade sales have been made at lofdto lid for Price’s make, and halfpenny less for Apoilos.
