A private telegram from London, dated Saturday, states that the wool sales concluded to-day. The market was firm at the highest quotations. Over 205,000 bales were catalogued, including 40,000 second hand; 80,000 were taken for export. The temporary depression was caused by inferior lots. INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, December 5. The enquiry re the late fire in Shortland street resulted in a verdict that the place was set fire to, but there was no evidence showing by whom. At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society the chairman said a considerable number of the ova were dead. At a meeting of the Presbytery held to-day to consider a call to the Rev Mr Mcßae, of Tasmania, it was resolved that the matter should remain undecided until the next quarterly meeting of Presbytery. The General Presbyterian Assembly meet this evening. At the wool sales to-day 600 bales were offered, principally washed ; long-woolled, in grease, 7d to Is Id ; half-bred, 7|d to 8d ; locks and pieces, 4|i. Messrs Thomas Henderson, junior, and O. Woodgate’s trial for the murder of his illegitimate children lasted all day. Mr Rogers appeared for the defence, and Mr Connell for the Crown. Each spoke about half an hour. The Judge summed up for an hour and three quarters. The jury, after an hour’s deliberation, gave a verdict of “Wilful murder.” Sentence of death has been passed without holding out hope, but a point has been reserved for the Court of Appeal whether the prisoner’s admission required corroboration. The prisoner was quite unconcerned. Dunedin, December 5, At the Licensing Court to-day, all new licenses, except one, were refused. The Bench cautioned the publicans against building expensive premises, and then coming to the Court for licenses on that ground. The City Council has determined to tax the hotels for baths two pounds per annum for the first and one pound for each subsequent one. Complaints are rife about the appointment of the number of members for the ridings. The proposal of the Canterbury and Dunedin Bace Clubs—the one to have a Leger, and the other a Derby of 250 sov, with a sweep of 20sovs—has given great satisfaction. Invercargill, December 5. Mr H. Baker, who has been inspector of surveys here since 1869, having formerly held the office of chief surveyor of the province of Southland, has been appointed chief surveyor of the Canterbury district.
