THE PRICE OF BREAD.
To the Editor of the Globe, Sir— Your paper has always come to the front in defence of the weak, and you have not been behind re the bread question. Now, Sir, I do consider this time they have gone a little too far. Compliants were not few or far between when the last rise took place. Working men with large families and small incomes should not be called on to pay 9d 41b loaf. Any one going into figures can easily see the rise in flour would not affect the price of the 41b loaf one farthing. 1. I would suggest that all careful housewives should to-day set their own ovens going. This little experiment would cost them about 5d at the outside for the 4lb loaf. 2. If any respectable tradesman, whether a bread baker or not, will call for the names of persons who will support him, and not desert him in the event of the others coming down to his level, I should think he will make a good thing of it. Heads of family do your duty ; you work hard ; don’t give it to fat bakers. Yours, &c, JUSTICE.
