Auckland, November 29. The son of Mr Dremsley has been drowned. A man named Kinghan has been arrested on a charge of indecent assault on two girls five and ten. Several provincial officers will be discharged to-morrow. The officers of the Treasury remain for the present. The officers of the Public Works Department and the Sheep Inspectors have received notice of the discontinuance of their services when the County system is established. Grahamstown, November 29 j The Hon F. Whitaker arrived yesterday. He attended the Sir Walter Scott Lodge last night, and was affiliated to the Scottish Masonry, for the purpose of taking office as Provincial Grand Master of the Scottish Constitution in North Island, to which post he has been elected. The affiliation took place in the presence of over one hundred Masonic brethren, and a banquet was held to celebrate the event. Hon F, Whitaker remains for a day to transact business. Today he is with Mr Mackay and Mr Pockey, conferring with natives re land purchase and the extension of the telegraph to Parora, the opposition to which is nearly removed. A movement is being commenced here to effect an amalgamation of the borough and C °The^istoppage of the big pump Is threatened. The Agent-General, under date Nov 22nd, telegraphs that he has despatched the Leicester with 340 emigrants for Wellington and Marlborough, and 289 for Otago ; and the Waipa and Wiltshire, with 560 for Canterbury ; also that the Hurunui, which put into Weymouth on account of an outbreak of scarlet fever, has finally sailed for WeiThe following telegram has-been received by the President of the New Zealand Wesleyan Conference here :—“ Paramatta, f N.8.W., 28th Nov, 1876 All the Presidents concur in admitting laymen to the next annual conference. J. B. Waterhouse, secretary General Australian Conference.” This will come into operation at once. . In the Court of Appeal, the; case Begma v Norman Evans was heard. This was a criminal case from,the Christchurch division of the Supreme Court, in which the prisoner was convicted of perjury, and Mr Justice dr v could be supported. Mr Gordon Allan appeared for the Crown, and stated the particulars of the case. The Chief Justice delivered judgment. He said there were several defects in the information, but the jurisdiction of the Court was not thereby affected, and the conviction would be affirmed. The other Judges all concurred.
In the case Webb v National Bank Mr Travers, by leave of the Court, cited several cases in support of his yesterday’s argument, and Mr Macassay replied at length. - Judgment was reserved, it being agreed between the parties that it should be delivered by Justice Williams in Dunedin, in vacation, if necessary. Leave was reserved to both parties to appeal to the Privy Council on the usual terms.
Dunedin, November 29. Eleven fresh cases of scarlet fever are reported to-day. All the single girls per .the Dunedin were engaged to-day in about one hour. The Mercantile Agency’s cablegram from London has confirmed the fall of a to Id in the price of wool. The Hon C. C. Bowen has been visiting the public institutions in the city. The Government have expressed themselves generally satisfied with the management of the industrial schools, and promise to provide necessary punishment cells. Bluff, Nov. 30, Arrived —Albion. (j From, a correspondent of the Press.) Timaeu, November 29. John Hamilton, a farmer at the Waitohi, about nine miles from Temnka, was arrested yesterday on a charge of illicitly distilling spirits. The police had for some time suspected that a still was at work at the Waitohi, and a day or two ago they searched Hamilton’s place. They found that a still had been at work there, but that the plant had disappeared. Several bags of malt and some wash were found near the place where the still had been worked, and two or three jars of whisky were discovered in Hamilton’s house. The ’man will be brought before the Resident Magistrate at Temuka to-morrow. The Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works met again to-day to consider the reply to their offer to let the Government have their offices at a valuation. A doubt was felt as to the power of the Board to sell the building or dispose of it in any other way. Ultimately a resolution was adopted, to the effect that the chairman be authorised to obtain their solicitor’s opinion as to the Board’s position in respect to the disposal of their property, and, if favorable, to request their solicitor to draw up the necessary deed conveying the same to the Mayor of Timaru, and the chairmen of the various Road Boards in South Canterbury, in trust for their respective districts. The premises, comprising a quarter acre of land, stone building and fittings, are worth nearly £3OOO. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB*SPRING MEETING.
