(Per Press Agencfy., LATEST FROM EUROPE ♦ [By Submarine-Cable.J THE EASTERN QUESTION. London, November 21, The British Ambassador at St Petersburg had a most cordial audience with the Emperor Alexander on 2nd November. The Czar urged that a complete agreement should exist between Russia and England on the Eastern question, whose aims he said were identical. He solemnly gave his sacred word of honor that he had no intention of acquiring possession of Stamboul, and if he was compelled to occupy Bulgaria, it would only be temporarily. The Czar deplored the feeling of distrust which exists in England towards Russia, and further said that the idea which had taken possession of the British people that Russia contemplated the conquest of India was absurd, such a result being impossible. Russia is mobilising six army corps. The Turkish troops are evacuating Herzegovina. Earl Salisbury, Secretary of State for India, and representative of England at the proposed Conference on Eastern affairs, will visit the Due de Gazes, Minister of Foreign Affairs in France, also Berlin and Vienna. Wellington, November 27. This morning's New Zealand Times justifies its action re Mr Barton on public grounds, and names its solicitors to receive service of process. Hokitika, November 28. Arrived—Last night, Otago, from Sydney. She sailed this morning for Wellington. Dunbdin, November 27. Five hundred and twenty-five pounds will be given away in prizes at the forthcoming Caledonian sports. The Round Hill tunnel was passed as com* pleted on Saturday. The line to Lawrence will be opened in January. Dunedin, November 28. There was a presentation last night to the Rev E. G. Penny. Invercargill, November 28. The Curator of the Southland Acclimatisation Society reports that the shipment of Californian ova transmitted here has turned out a thorough success. At least twenty thousand ova have been hatched successfully, and the young fish look remarkably well.
