HEATHCOTE ROAD BOARD.

This Board met on Thursday last. The clerk reported having received—Ordinary rates, £43 10s lOd ; Waimakiriri, £3 15s 8d; WaUham special rate, £5 3s ; cutting gorse fences, £2 18s ; from the sale of soil, £1 ; deposits, £lO ; re cheque books, £2 10s ; Provincial Government Grant, £750. Total, £BIB 17s 6d. Also, he read a report in reference to works and other matters, which was considered ; re Junction and Dyers' roads, it was resolved that the first be be formed when the estimated cost has been received, and that Dyer's road be surveyed before any money is expended on same, and that the correspondents interested be informed of this decision. Resolved—" That tenders be called for making a new valuation of the rateable property in this district according to the new Rating Act; that consideration of holidays for the Board's labourers be deferred till next meeting ; that tenders be called for forming Mr McHutchinson's road, parallel with Colombo road ; for carting 1500yds of screened shingle ; that the Avon road be advertised as unfit for traffic, owing to the Avon being so unusually high. In reference to petition signed by Mr G. Hawker and eight others re shingling Portman and London streets and footpaths, it was resolved that tenders be called for the work. Mr R. Vincent waited on the Board with petition from *Mr Loughnan and fiftyfour others, requesting that the river road, from the quay to the Opawa railway station, when it was decided as a preliminary step that the road should be surveyed and marked out. Mr Hartnell also attended re carting rubble from Moa Bone Point, and wae advised to wait and let the contractor with the Government for widening the Sumner road remove the stone and stack same clear of the road, where he could then get it. The following correspondence was then read : Prom the Provincial Secreiary, that £ISOO had been allocated to this Board ; tha £750 had gone forward for payment, and that the balance would depend upon the land sales for the remainder of the year. From a ratepayer re Mr Horler's obstructions on the river road at the quay ; also complaining that his premises as a soap aud candle manufactory is a foul nuisance highly prejudicial to health and a great source of annoyauce to the district. The clerk was directed to take action in the matter. From Mr J. A. Morgan re pool of stagnant water re fence encroaching on footpath, also non-payment of subscription by a subscriber who made himself liable for his share of the cost for forming Barbour street. The clerk was directed to acknowledge letter and report upon the matters referred to. From Mr E. J. T. Ford re bad state of the Opawa road by the school. The foreman to report on same ; and in reference to Mr Ford's other letter, the clerk to inform him the Board will undertake the formation of road through rural section No 157 when the estimated amount of coat for the work has been received, and on condition the persons interested dedicate the road as soon as formed, and that the obstructions by gorse and broom fences on the Opawa road will be attended to. From Graham and Murphey, requesting payment for extras re contract for forming the Waltham streets. Granted to the extent of £6 10s. From Mr R". Davis and ninetyseven others re Mr H. Hopkins's verandah, Resolved—" That the petition be acknowledged, stating the action of Mr Hopkins in refusing to remove his posts to the edge of the footpath, precludes the idea of the Board's complying with the request of the petition, as the Board feels it to be its duty, in the interest of the public, to know whether or not it has a right to have an obstruction removed from a public highway." Tenders were opened for shingling continuation of Opawa road, and one at is Id accepted, The Board resolved to hold a special meeting next Thursday, for the purpose of considering tenders for making a new valuation.
