THE LABOUR MARKET.
To the Editor of the Globe Sir, —Seeing a letter in your last issue from Mr G. Walker on the state of the labor market, allow me, through your widely circulated paper, to state a few facts which you can rely upon as being the truth. First, I can substantiate every word of Mr Walker’s letter, so I need not make any further comment thereon. I can positively assure you that I have myself taken into my house three respectable tradesmen who had tramped their way for more than fifty miles, and they told me they had not tasted food for two days, I believed it from the manner they ate when food was put before them. The same three bad been refused food on the road because they had no money to pay for it. Another instance occurred the other evening of a station cook and a station roustabout, who came to me begging food, and from the way they ate a new loaf for which I sent across to Mr Thompson, I verily believe that they were starving. In fact I am applied to every day in a similar way. I think probably that some working man may corroborate the facts I now write, and also have something to say through your medium. I could mention a great many more instances, but I am afraid I shall intrude on your valuable time and space. You know, sir, I have had some experience in the labour market, consequently I can speak experimentally, I may also add that there are many men loafing about the street who really won’t take work when offered to them. Those men of course I don’t include in my list of the unemployed. Begging pardon for troubling you, I am, yours, &c, J. W. HILL, A 1 Registry office.
