GHEYMOUTH, November 23. In the coal pit of Heath and Co, they have struck a small seam at a depth of 225 ft. They expect to get the main seam at 30ft further. Oamaru, November 22. The Lydia Howard e Troupe opened last night at the Masonic Hall to a good house, The pieces chosen being " Ohilperic," and " The Waterman." The company met with a hearty reception. The troupe appear two raoTe nights, after which they proceed to Dunedin, Dunedin, November 23. The inquiry into the alleged ill-treatment of a girl in the Industrial School closed yesterday. The decision is deferred. The evidence showed that she was a great trial to the superintendent, that she was kindly treated, and that she was fastened up for fear of her doing injury to herself. The fat cattle show is fixed for the 19th, It is expected to be the best ever held here. The house of a settler at Longbush was destroyed by fire. It was insured in the Norwich Onion for £IOO. Malignant fever carried off several children in one house yesterday. Pour others are now down with it in the same house. Authority was given by the Resident Magistrate to-day to remove the children to the fever hospital, but their father threatened to shoot anyone who attempted their removal. Andrew Gainter, charged with arson, has been committed for trial. The annual meeting of the Mosgiel Woollen Company was held to-day. The available balance shown was £3607, which has been carried forward to clear off the overdraft. Dunedin, November 24.
