Auckland, November 16. A man has discovered gold in Hicks' Bay in small quantities. Sir George Grey returned from Kawau today. He goes to the Thames on Saturday morning. The imported cattle by the City of Auckland, for Mr Buckland, all from the Baines herd, are chiefly of the Booth blood. Wellington, November 17.

The Coal Company have struck the main seam in their bore hole at a depth of 63 feet this morning, The seam, which is hard and of splendid quality, is 15 feet 6 inches in thickness. The coal is the best yet seen in the district, and there is no water. Dttnedin, November 17.

The first meeting of the Education Board under the new Act, was held yesterday. It was decided to prepare a list of the requirements, and ask for a proportion of the £50,000 of loan put aside for educational purposes. The contracts for school buildings now existing, amount to £IO,OOO, and to the present time £6BOO more is required for school accommodation. Mr J. L.
