NEWS OF THE DAY.

Fire Police. —The meeting for practice advertised for this evening, is postponed in consequence of the fire this morning. The San Francisco Mail.— We direct attention to the extension of time for closing the outward mail via San Francisco, Diocesan Synod. —As will be seen by our report elsewhere, the session of the Diocesan Synod closed last evening. Dr Carr.— This gentleman will resume ds seances, to-morrow night in the Oddfellows’ Hall, at million prices. Kaiapoi Farmers’ Club, —At the usual meeting of this club on Thursday evening, \lr Duncan, Ashley, is expected to contribute some information on a certain disease in sheep.

Concert.— A complimentary benefit con* C j rt to Herr Schott, at which Miss Rosins Carandini will assist, will take place shortly. A veiy good programme has been prepared. New Arrivals. — By the Southern Gross, barque, from Hobart Town, there arrived yesterday a very handsome little Shetland oony. This beautiful little animal is for Mr P. Cunningham. By the same vessel ar. rived a splendid pait of fancy pigeons, for Ar Miwquame.

Tea Meeting. —The tea and public meeting in connection with the Wesleyan district meeting npw in session, takes place this evening at the Durham street Wesleyan Church,

Sale op Thoroughbbed Stock —The sale of Mr Griffi h’s stud of thoroughbred horses will take place at the Spfeydon, to-morrow. Mr Griffith’s stock comprises some of the best blood of the old country, and there is sure to be a large gathering on the occasion.

Independent Obdeb op Oddfellows.— A meeting of those favorable to starting a lodge was held at the Britannia Hotel last evening. It was definitely decided to open a lodge at the above hotel on Tuesday, December sth. Correspondence was read from the D.D.G.M of Timaru, Bro Bowers, stating that he was authorised by the Grand Lodge at Dunedin to open the above lodge, to be called the Avon Lodge. U.R.O. —The following pair-oared scratch races will take place on Saturday under the auspices of the U.R.O. First heat, Kestevea and Searell v Harding and Hobday ; second heat, Jacobsen and Culpan v Walters and Stavely ; third heat, Campbell and Brown v Mathias and Stringer ; fourth heat, Hawkins and Glasson v Willcox and Hawkes ; odd crew, Rule and Barnes. The winners of the first heat to row the odd crew. Course from Pratt’s to Herdsona.

St Albans —The annual meeting of the St Albans Cricket Club was held in the old schoolroom on Monday evening. There was a good attendance ; Mr Dickinson was voted to the chair. The secretary read the report and balance sheet, which showed this club to be in a flourishing condition. After the transaction of the general business the election of officers for the ensuing year was proceeded with. A vote of thanks to the chairman and retiring officers brought the meeting to a close.

Cricket.— The U.C.0.0. sides for the North and South match, next Saturday, will be—North, Messrs Barker, Cuff, Cobb, Dawe, Dickinson, Lance, Leach, W. B. Millton, J, D. Millton, Stevens, W. G. Walker, J. Warner, Wood. South—Messrs Alington, H. Cotterill, B. Cotterill, W. Ootterill, Izard, Macquarie, Moore, H. W. Neilson, O’Connell, Ollivier, Parkerson, A, O. Wilson. A match is also arranged to be played between the Bangiora and Papanni Clubs on Saturday, on the ground of the U. 0.0.0. The following are the names of the M.C.C. eleven, who will play against Leeston to-morrow : Messrs Alpe, Ashby, Ataok, Frith, Mclntyre, Monck, Palairet, Reeder, Bitso, Taylor, and A C. Watson. The team will leave by the first train.

Kaiapoi Borough School Committee, The usual monthly meeting for dispatch of ordinary business, was held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs Kerr (chairman), Ellen, Pashby, Bean, and Parnham. The chairman reported that a tender had been accepted for sinking well, removing lavatories, erecting tank and force pnmp, bat the Secretary for Education stated that there was at present no fund available, and the work would have to stand over. The chairman said the committee had been requested by the Minister to have the work carried out, so as to provide a supply of pure drinking water. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Ellen, seconded by Mr Pashby, that the tender be accepted and the work put in progress. Accounts amounting to £3O 6s Id were passed for payment, when the committee adjourned. Fire. —Shortly after 5.30 a m. this morning, an alarm of fire was raised by Sergeant Hughes, who rang the Lichfield street belL On reaching the spot it was found that the shops occupied by Mr Donaldson, general dealer on Durham and Cashel streets were on fire. So rapid was the progress of the flames that Mr Donaldson had no time to save anything at all scarcely. The fire extended to Mr Thompkins’ tinsmiths’ shop, which was next door, and gutted that- The further progress of it was stayed by Mr Clarkson's brick wall. The fire brigade were early on the spot, and succeeded in getting the fire under control shortly after arrival. The fire originated in the back of Mr Donaldson’s premises, but there is no evidence as to how it occurred. The insurances are-Mr Donaldson £l5O on building, and £LO on stock, both in the Liverpool, London and Globe; Mr Tompkins £2OO on the building and stock, and £IOO on the furniture, &c, both in the New Zealand.
