MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, November T 3. (Before R. Westenra, Junr, Esq., J.P.) Drunk, and Disorderly. Thomas Laffey, charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s; Charles Evans, 5s and Is cabhire; William Millen, 10s ; R. A. M'Call, 10s and Is b'd cabhire. Two inebriates who appeared for the first time were dismissed with a caution. T. Daniels, who had been remanded on a charge of drunkenness, and breaking a pane of glass in Mr Woodman's shop was ordered to pay £1 damage done, and Is cabhire. A first offender charged with being drunk while in charge of a horse and trap, was fined 10s ; Robert Winters, arrested for being drunk and committing an act of exposure, was fined 10s. Assault and Insulting Language.— An information against Peter Harris for assault, and against Albert, E. J. and Mark Hawkin and W. H. Strange f >r using abusive and insulting language to the defendant in the former case, was, on the application of Mr Joynt, adjourned until Thursday next. Protection Order.—The adjourned application by Martha Bncknell, for a protection order against her husband Charle3 Bucknell, was called. There was no appearance of either party, and the case was dismissed. LYTTELTON. Monday, November 13. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M. Assault and Disorderly Conduct.— Captain Hodder, of the ship Waitangi, charged HenTy Blobin with these offences. From evidence given by Captain Hodder and the second officer, it appeared that on Sunday accused, who was under the influence of drink, made a great disturbance aboard the Waitangi, and when reproved by the captain, spit in his face and pushed him. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. Using Obscene and Threatening Language to the Police.—P. J. Burke, charged with the above offence by Sergeant Major O'Grady, was sentenced to a week's imprisonment, with hard labor, Threatening and Abusive Language James Pope was accused by Harry Newton with using threatening language towards him at the Head of the Bay on October 31st. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for prosecutor. Several witnesses were examined, who proved that accused had not only used most disgusting and threatening language to complainant and his wife, but had also threatened to take Newton's life. The Bench ordered defendant to find two sureties for £2O each, and he bound himself in £4O to keep the peace for six months, and also to pay Court costs and solicitor's fee, 21s.
