The Globe. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1876.

The Otago Convention has met and separated. It has passed resolutions urging the recall of the Governor, and praying for the erection of Otago into a separate colony. During its two day’s session it succeeded in making itself extremely ridiculous. Its proceedings throughout partook so entirely of burlesque, that we can well understand the accents of despair in which the Daily Times referred to the proposals of Mr. Macandrew, and which have been accepted by the Convention. Had any portion of the Otago community ever entertained the slightest hope of a practical result from the deliberations of the Convention, that hope must have disappeared now. The common sense of the people of Otago must revolt against such an Utopian proposal as the separation of the province into a separate colony. We cannot imagine that the idea has never calmly been entertained, and it would be mere waste of time and space to discuss it on its merits here. We can well understand the impatience which members manifested to return to their homes. They must have felt the absurd position in which they had been placed. We hope Sir G. Grey will take a similar step, and an Auckland Convention meet and prove that separation would save that province £120,000 a year. This might be followed by Canterbury taking a similar course, and showing that she also wanted to save, say to £200,000, by separation. The same process might be continued, till little Taranaki was left alone with the whole of the colonial burdens on her shoulders. Further comment is unnecessary.
