Mr Watt’s ch m Ngaro, 6 yrs, Bst 91b (Brimmer) 0 Mr Delamain’s b f Titania, 3 yrs, 7st 81b (Mien) 0 Betting—6 to 4on the field, Tadmor having the preference, and looking very fit. A good start was effected ; Tadmor going away with the lead at a hot pace with Izaak and Ngaro close up, Titania getting a bad start. In this order they ran until the turn, when Tadmor began to get away from Izaak and Ngaro, and they let him out a little. Down the straight it was plain to be seen that it was all oyer bar shouting, as Tadmor had the race easily in hand. French touched up Izaak with the whalebone, but it was no good, and Tadmor scored the first victory of the day by about three lengths. Time— Imin 48^secs.
Derby Stakes of 10 sovs each, h ft, for acceptors, with 100 sovs added; colts, Bst lOlbs; fillies and geldings, Bst 61b; one and a half miles; closed with 26 subs. Mr H. Redwood’s b c Songster Bst 101 b (A Lyford) 1 Mr W. Walters’ Fanny Fisher Colt, Bst
101 b (French) 2 Mr Noswortliy’s Fallacy, Bst 61b (Hay) 0 Mr Logan’s b c Dead Heat, Bst 101 b (Waddell) 0 Betting—s to 4 agst Fallacy,.2 to 1 agst Fanny Fisher, 5 to I agst the others. The scratching at 1,20 of Middleton, Wrangler, Titania, and Lady of the Lake reduced the Derby candidates to six only, out of the reduced field of ten. This was followed by Danbury and Lady Lea, bringing the total down to four. Fallacy and Fanny Fisher were fancied for the money, and .Songster, the ultimate winner, had but few friends. As they took their preliminary, the four candidates were scanned uarorwly. Songster looked very pink and fit to run for anything. The Fanny Fisher colt had plenty of admirers, and Fallacy was greatly fancied. Dead Heat, though looking very well, was rather too much for his rider, as the sequence proved. Mr Fitzroy got the lot away to a very good ■cart, Dead Heat and Fallacy taking the e id, with the colt and Songster in close attendance, Fanny Fisher colt being held. After a few lengths had been gone, Dead Heat got the best of his rider, and went off the course, being out of the race. Fallacy still held the lead, with Fanny Fisher colt, still held, close up, Songster lying in rear In this order they went till the back of the course, when Songster began to creep up, -tnd Fanny Fisher also to close on Fallacy. From here until close to the turn into the straight they were all together. Coming to the straight run, Fanny Fisher colt took a slight lead, with Fallacy close up and Songster. In the straight Fallacy fell back, and Songster and Fanny Fisher went at it, both whipping. They were on even terms until coming close home, when Songster came away and won a fine race by a length. Fallacy three lengths in rear, Time—2min 62^ec.

When at last they were dismissed, Guy lost at least six lengths at the start. Mangle and Danebury cut out the running, Punga and Guy in rear. Turning into the straight run, Danebury began to come away and soon took the lead Punga tried to come, but it was no use. Guy here began to improve his position, and ran into second place. Ultimately Danebury came away a winner by a length ; Guy Fawkes second ; Mangle third ; and Punga beaten off. Time, slfsec. Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, of 250 sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 10 sovs each, ;h ft, for acceptors ; second horse to save his stake. Two miles.
Mr Redwood’s Guy Fawkes, 5 yrs, 9st 101 b ... ... ... ... (Lyford) 1 Mr Delamain’s Templeton, 9st 91b (Rowlands) 2 Mr Stephenson’s Rob Roy, 7st 81b (Allan) 3 Betting—3 to lon the field.
Ngaro, Tadmor, Izaak Walton, Maroro, and Fallacy were scratched for this event. Ariel was made a hot favorite, but there were many who pinned their faith to Templeton. At the first attempt to start there was a failure, and Rob Roy went a half mile gallop to himself. When the lot were at last got away Templeton went off with the lead, Cloth of Gold second, the rest in a cluster. In this order they passed the stand. At the far side Templeton and the Cloth were still going first and second, with Ariel close up. Guy now began to come, and at the top of the turn into the straight rnn in he collared Templeton. These two were separated by three lengths from the rear division, and a fine race ensued down the straight, the old horse doing all he could to beat old Guy, but he came away a winner by half-a-length. The rest were nowhere. Time—3min. 40|secs.
