ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
{Per Press Agency.') Auckland, November 6. The City of New York arrived at nine this morning. The Zealandia left San Fran cisco on the 11th. The Australia left Kandavau for San Francisco on the 28th of November. The Zealandia arrived there on the Ist of November. She left for Sydney in company with the City of New York on the 2nd. Passenger for Lyttelton, per City of New York -Mr John Rennie. Passenger for Otago —Mr A. Bell. The City of New York brings a large shipment of Californian salmon ova for the Acclimatisation Societies of Auckland and Canterbury in splendid condition.
The City of New York sails South at 5 p.m. The whaler Two Brothers arrived at Honolulu on the 20th of October, with a crew of thirteen out of a total of sixteen of the whaling fleet hailing from Honolulu. The lost vessels were crushed in the ice. GENERAL SUMMARY. The ex-Sultan Murad is dead. The Turkish Extraordiuary Council was willing for an armsticefor six months, meanwhile carrying out reforms. Mukhtar Pasha has advanced into Montenergo, capturing ;the intrenchments without opposition. Fifteen thousand Spanish troops have been despatched to Cuba. Anticipating a renewal of hostilities the Servian General has called out all men between eighteen and fifty. Roumania has mustered its army in readiness.
Two thousand -five hundred Montenegrins attacked Mukhtar Pasha, and drove him to the frontier, killing 800 Turks. The Montenegrins burned Tibinze, and cut off Mukhtar Pasha from his reinforcements. At a meeting at St James’s Hall, Mr Gladstone condemned the Cabinet for pursuing a policy opposed to the wishes of Parliament and the people, and expressed his conviction that the making of Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Bulgaria independent of the Ottoman Empire would settle the difficulty. The revolutionists in Mexico have been driven from the strongholds, and General Guerra taken prisoner,
England proposed a conference of the Great Powers re the Eastern difficulties, but it fell through. It is understood that the Russian demands were such as could not
have been met by the conference. Russia offered Roumania absolute independence for permission to march her troops through their territory. Roumania consented, War preparations in Russia are very active.
The Servians claim some successes in minor engagements with the Turks. In consequence of damage to British trade by the American protective tariff, representations have been made by Sheffield to Earl Carnarvon that Great Britain should place a heavy import duty on American goods. The Cabinet, after consideration, declined. The Imperial edict by China expresses regret for Margary’s murder, and admits the right of foreigners to travel through the country. Envoys have been sent with letters of apology. An enthusiastic meeting of Greeks resolved that the position of the Greek provinces in Turkey is intolerable, and resolved to strengthen the army. Russia proposes the occupation of Bulgaria. The London Times declares that in insisting on this the Emperor had mistaken the mind of Europe, Overtures have been made by Russia to Austraia, The Porte grounds its resistance to the proposals of the Great Powers on its inability to control the mob and prevent the massacre of Christians. There is terrible suffering in some of the richest parts of Cuba ; 40,000 rations were distributed twice a week. A general insurrection in Algeria threatened. Terrible ravages have been made by yellow fever in the Southern States of America. Lord Derby in reply to a deputation, expressed his strong belief in the permanency of peace. He favored local autonomy.
