NEWS OF THE DAY.
Douglas v. Matson. —This case, the last set down for hearing at the civil sittings of the Supreme Court, terminated yesterday in the jury finding a verdict for the plaintiff for £152 ss, less £45, the set-off of defendant.
Lecture and Entertainment. —Dr Oarr will deliver a lecture on phrenology and other subjects, and give a varied enteitainment on Wednesday next at the Oddfellows’ Hall.
U.A.0.D., Pioneer Lodge, No 47. —The usual fortnightly meeting wan held in the Templar Hall, Worcester street, last night. New members were made, and some proposed for initiation. The lodge continues to rapidly increase in strength. Fire Brigade Station —The new fire brigade station is now completed, and after being inspected by the city surveyor, was formally taken possession of yesterday by the fire brigade committee, on behalf of the Council.
Lincoln Show,— The entries closed yesterday for this show. The numbers of entries received were—cattle, 82 ; sheep, 44 ; horses, 91; pigs, 12; implements, 10; dairy produce, 37 ; making a total of 276 entries, being thirty-nine in excess of last year. Music Hall. —There was a very good house at the Canterbury Music Hall last evening, when Mr Darrell took his benefit, The piece went capitally throughout, applause being frequent and hearty. The company proceed to Timaru to-day, where they play for a short season, returning for the race week.
St John’s Presbyterian Church, Lyttelton. —The Rev J, Blmslie will deliver a lecture in the above church this evening ; subject, “ England 100 years ago.”
Wool. —Some of the first bales of ibis season’s clip, from the northern district, anived at Amberley yesterday from Mr Rutherford’s station, Waiau. Tatters all’s Club, A preliminary meeting, for the purpose of forming a Tattoraall’s Club, will be hold at Warner’s Hotel this evening, at eight o’clock.
Districts under Registration of Births, Deaths, and Marriage Acts,— The district hitherto known as the Christchurch district has been divided into three, viz—the Christchurch district, the Malvern district, and the Hororata district, the boundaries of which are set forth in the Gazette. Sudden Death of an Infant. —An infant child belonging to Mr Thomas Gardner, Phillipstown, was found dead yesterday morning. The child was well at fen o’clock, and slept in its mother’s arms all night. On the parents awaking at half past six, the child was dead, and did not seem to have been overlain. An inquest will be held.
Northern Agricultural and Pastoral association’s Show. Special trains will leave Christchurch and Oxford for Rangiora at 10.30 a m. on Thursday, The ordinary evening trains from Rangiora to Christchurch, Amberley, and Oxford, will leave at 6 p.m. instead of 5.30 p.m. Single fares for the double journey will be charged that day. Educational —The following rates have been levied :—Educational district of Halswell, a rate of 3d in the £ ; district of Heathcote Upper, Id in the £, both payable to Mr J. T. Harrap ; district of Garleton, 6d in the £, payable to Mr P. Briggs ; district of Papanui, 8d in the £, payable to Mr H. Adams ; district of Southbrook, 3d in the £, payable to Mr G, Smith ; district of East Oxford, 4d in the £, payable to Mr P. Briggs. Timaru Hospital. —The return of patients in the Timaru Hospital for October was as follows :—Patients under treatment at date of last return, 33 males and 7 females. Admitted during month, 10 males and 1 females ; discharged during month, cured, 15 males and 3 females ; relieved, I male and 1 female ; dead, 1 male ; remaining under treatment, 26 males and 4 females ; total, 30.
Provincial Account,—The statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Pro vincial Treasurer for the quarter ended September 30th, is published in the Gazette. The receipts amounted to £215,166 5a lOd, the principal items being capitation grant, £5997 19s Id; land revenue, £144,995 0s 5d ; education, £306 19s 9d; education, special rates, £1162 18s Id ; education, household rates and fees. £llsl 7s lOd; railways and wharves, £51,634 8s 9d; the balance on July Ist was £279,679 11s 2d, making a total of £494 845 17s. The expenditure amounted to £274,679 3s 8d; out of this sum there wak expended on education, £12,158 17s 9d ; on school buildings, £12,377 9s 7d; public library, £1448 17s 6d ; museum, £3201 ; bridges, £3009 5s 7d; roads, £5671 19a 8d; road boards, £31,302 16s 6d ; harbor works, £19,196 7s Id; railways and wharves, working expenses, renewal fund, &c, £54,851 7a 2d; railway works, £40.805 8a lOd ; grants to municipalities, £15,000 ; site for public buildings, £SOOI. Balance on hand : cash|£2ll,Bß6 13s 8d; railway stores suspense account, £8829 I9s 8d ; balance to credit of railway renewal fund, £32,715 13s 2d, Provincial Officers.— The following notice appears in the Gazette : —“ The attention of the officers of the Provincial Government is directed to the 34th section of Financial Arrangements Bill, 1876, which provides that ‘ every officer and person employed in the service of the Government of any province shall, on the date of the abolition of such province, become and be an officer or person employed by the Go vernment of the colony.’ In accordance with this provision, which will probably receive His Excellency’s assent this day, officers in the service of the Provincial Government will, on and alter the day following the prorogation of Parliament, be expected to report to and receive instructions from the General Government as they may be directed. The Superintendent takes occasion to express his thanks on behalf of the province to the present officers of the Provincial service, for the faithful and efficient manner in which they have discharged the duties of their several offices ; and his personal acknowledgements of the willing assistance he baa always received from them in the administration of the public business of the province.—W. ROLLESI'ON, Superintendent of Canterbury.”
Canterbury Railways.—A comparative statement of earnings and expenditure upon the Canterbury railways, witli analyses of tratDc, for six months ending 30ih September, has been published in a Gazette issued on the HOfh October, 1876. The earnings for the same period in 1875 amounted to £77,464, while the expenditure showed as follows Engineer’s department, £81,864; traffic department, £28,191; total, £60,055. The excess of earnings over expenditure was £17,408; working expenses, 77.52 per cent. The earnings for the six months of the pre sent year amount to £lll,OBB, while the expenditure shows as follows :—Engineer’s department, £50,352 ; traffic department, £4O 478; total, £90,830. The excess of earnings over expenditure is £20,25/; work ing expenses, 70.18 per cent. To I his latter return is appended u foot noio to the effect that this account, owing to the preparations made in anticipation of the Abolition Act, contains seven months’ expenditure against six months’ receipts. The working expenses for cieptember, £11,226, under ordinary civ curastances, would have been a charge on the next half year. The excess of earnings over expenditure should thus show £31,483. The tonnage of merchandise for 1876 has been 158,849, while that of 1875 was 124,641; increase, 34,208. The number of passengers for 1876 was 349,951, against 247,060 for 1875. The revenue account shows the re ceipts for the same period to have been £113,447, while the expenditure has been £93,162. showing a balance of £20,285. In these figures shillings and pence have been omitted. The general balance account for the six months ending 30th September, 1876, shows a total of £128,699.
The proprietor of a young ladies’ academy in Illinois has utterly mined his business by causing to be inserted in a large number of papers a picture of the building, with two girls on the balcony with last year's ha;s on their head.
