J, Debney, a clerk in the General Government Waste lands office, was arrested to-day aboard the barque Adela, leaving for Newcastle, on a charge of embezzlement of a considerable sum, Auckland, October 30. Two young men, Henry Smallfield and Gentil, engaged a boat for a sail in the harbour yesterday afternoon; When off Kohimarama, in going about, the boat capsized. Both got on the keel, but were washed off several times. The accident occurred not a hundred yards from the shore, and was seen by some men at the cattle station, who put off. When they reached the boat Smallfield had disappeared, and Gentil, who had kept hold of an oar, was nearly gone. Smallfield’s body was found in the afternoon. Blenheim, October 30. The shearers held a large meeting on Saturday evening, and unanimously resolved to strike for twenty shillings per hundred, There is "every probability of the ruuholders giving way, Westport, October 28. Re the wreckage at Karamea, the information being vague, there is no official report yet. The Westport Times , on the authority of the ferryman at the Little Wanganui river, says that a carved gilt figure of Cupid three feet nigh, off the stern of a vessel, has been picked up, also cedar cabin doorstep with brass combings, water casks, oak planking, cork lining of life boat, blocks, cordage, and gear. The ferryman says that the beach is strewn with debris, of which he has collected a large quantity. He has the buoy marked La Hogue. It is understood that the Collector of Customs has telegraphed to the Commissioner for instructions. Dunedin, October 28. At a meeting of the shareholders of the Titanic Steel Company a resolution was passed to at once place the affairs of the company in liquidation. Terms of unmeasured abuse were used against the gross mismanagement, and especially against Mr Smith, who bad fooled them by assuring them they would not have to pay more than three, whilst they had already paid seven calls. Fort Chalmers, October 30. Arrived —The Elizabeth Graham, barque, from London, with 1100 tons of cargo, and a few passengers. She was 105 days out, and experienced unsettled weather and variable winds after passing the Cape of Good Hope. Arrived, last night, the ship James Nicol Fleming, 82 days from London. She reports that, on October Bth, Thomas Gaynor, the steward, jumped overboard, and was never seen after. It was supposed to be from the effects of drink. TIMARU, Octoler 29. A telegram was received by his Worship the Mayor, on Saturday, from the Hon E. W. Stafford, stating that the Legislative Council had struck out of the Timaru Harbor Bill the borrowing powers and endowments, but that the £IOO,OOO and the foreshore were secured. At a meeting of the members of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, on Friday, it was decided to hold the second annual meeting on Monday, January 2nd, 1877 ; also, to double the amount of prize money given at last meeting, and to have medals struck for the principal events if suitable ones can be obtained at moderate cost.
