EAST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual meeting of the school committee of the East Curistchurch educational district was held last evening. Present—Messrs G. L. Lee (chairman), Rose. H, Thomson, Kirk. "In the report of the school committee bearing date the 10th December last, certain c works were enumerated as absolutely neces- c sary for the educational requirements of the g district, the Government being thereby led t to make provision for these works. c " The deputation from the ratepayers now 3 consider that the contribution to be made by 1 them for these works is more than they expected, and are anxious that some of them 1 should be dispensed with as not being I required. 1 " The Government, fully agreeing with the view of the ratepayers that if the works c enumerated in the memo accompanying your letter of the 18th inst are not now necessary, and that the want of them would not retard r the progress of education they should be dis- I pensed with, are willing to consider any application the school committee may wish 1 to make on the subject. a " I have, &c, l " R. Habens, the t chairman, and Mr Veel be appointed I to wait upon the Minister for Educa- a tion with special reference to the whole question of the special building rate levied on the district, with full powers to act upon l the matter." c Mr Kirk seconded the motion, which was agreed to. r A letter from the Minister for Education, 1 sanctioning the appointment of Mr Exall to teach grp.tuitoußly for three months in the < school. A letter was read from Mr Loughrey, t stating that the attendance at the Gloucester p street school for the past week was 1003, and recommending Miss Young for the vacancy in the pupil teaching staff. t Mr Thomson moved—" That Miss Young a be appointed as pupil teacher in room of Miss McCormack resigned," which was f, agreed to. i It was resolved—" That pupil teachers be s placed on the same footing as other teachers c as regards giving notice on leaving their situations." « The committee then adjourned.
