Sailed—City of San Francisco. Arrived—Wakatipu. Melbourne, October 13, The ship Parthema, from London, spoke the Timaru, from London to Otago ; and the St Leonard’s, from London to Wellington. Clifton has been pulled up lame, and has gone back in the betting. The Arawata was detained for the New Zealand Suez mail, which left yesterday, (Per Alhambra via Hokitika.) Captain Machel on Wednesday morning assaulted Captain Standish, Chief Comisaioner of the Police, in the breakfast room of the Melbourne Club with a riding whip, leaving some ugly marks. The affair which arose over some simple cause has caused no little sensation in certain quarters. The Electoral Bill has been nearly gone through, and Government have successfully carried all their propositions. Bain is still very much wanted in all the colonies, and already there has been a taste of summer hot winds. The new Italian Opera Company arrive by the next month’s mail; Wilson’s circus remains open three months longer, and a whole host of amusements are announced. There is no alteration in Cup betting— Irish Stew and Yalentia are the best favorites, but Newminster is considered dangerous for both the Derby and Cup. Tocal is a good favorite for the Derby. The Dandenong relief fund now reaches a large amount, and a considerable sum is raised for the men who formed the boat’s crew. INTERPROVINGIAL. Auckland, October 13. Mr Horton’s offer for the purchase of the Southern Cross and Weekly News was ac cepted at a meeting of shareholders to-day. The price was £6700, which covers the
debts (£6200) due by the company, besides 10s per share to the shareholders. A private letter received here states that the vice-president of the Pacific Mail Company threatens if the Colonial Governments refuse to agree to the proposed alteration, that they will withdrew the boats. Wellington, October 13. The Reverend Robert Ward died this morning, He was the first Primitive Methodist Minister who crossed the equator. He arrived in New Zealand in 1844. Produce prices are as follows :—Flour, £l3 15s to £l4 ; oats, 2s 4d to 2s Bd, and firm ; stocks are full ; bran, Is to la Id, and in good supply ; wheat, milling, no sale ; chick. 4s to 4s 6d. Maize is overstocked at 4s to 4s 3d. Hams and bacon—The market is glutted at 6|d to Bd. Cheese, 8-J-d to 9d, and in full supply. Potatoes are in moderate supply at 80s. Pollard, 7s to Bd. Wellington, October 14. Arrived—The Charles Edward, from Nelson, with about sixty diggers returned from Kumara, Nelson, October 13. Arrangements have been made with Mr Bennett for a visit of the English Eleven, on the same terms as those made with the other places. Dunedin, October 13. The new harbor dredge, built here at a cost of £22,000, will be launched on Tuesday. Came, the French cannon player, has met with little encouragement, Mr Dampier’s Yalgean has been running all the week at the Princess. It is understood that Mr Wilson, of Gisborne, takes action for malicious prosecution for perjury against Stamper. When tho Provincial Executive have obtained several other legal opinions on the validity of the Abolition Act, they will consider ,them. The Times says it is understood that the Hon G. McLean will be Resident Minister at Dunedin under the Abolition Act, The Memale estate, of 30,000 acres, offered at auction, was passed in, and no offer made for the Five River estate. The Australia’s mail was delivered here forty-one hours’ in advance of the contract time. The Rifle Association adopt the new Wim bledon targets at the forthcoming meeting. Bishop Moran proceeds to Auckland and Sydney in a few days, The assault by the Thomasina McLellan’s crew on Jewiss, a waterman, appears to have been greatly exaggerated. Mr Mansford, R.M., in dismissing the case, said Jewiss had given a distorted statement. Donald, second mate, who was in charge of the men at the time of the disturbance, seemed desirous of preventing loss of life, and thereupon determined to land the men. And it was not till he found the prisoner Rennie with the boat’s painter, drawing her towards the beach, that he struck him. A free fight took place, and, according to the evidence, they were all thrown out of the boat, and were floundering about like a lot of porpoises.
